Yep...look on YouTube to see how tractors are used on European roads. Their road gears must be a heck of a lot taller then what we see in the US

One thing I see in the use of trucks in the US is the ability to haul sand, ice melt and such as well as plow. Definitely not going to be able to haul and distribute tons of sand when using a tractor
Another thing...I've seen vids of tractors plowing secondary roads, but major highways are a different matter, even in Europe. I haven't seen pictures or vids of what is used, but I'd wager European countries aren't using tractors on roads such as the Autoban or Autostrada.

Bigger tractors in Europe, at least 100HP and up, are fitted with either 40 km/h (25 MPH) or 50 km/h (32 MPH) Gearboxes, it's up to the owner to decide what gearbox he wants.

Keep in mind. while these tractors setup to be used on snow shores on the Winter, they will take the snow gear out for the Summer and use the same tractors for road maintenance, like brush cutting, hauling materials for road construction and so on.

As Agvg pointed out a few times, a tractor is a much more versatile machine.

There are significant difference between 40 and 50+ km/h tractors, you must have separate braking system front and rear, front suspension and trailers for high speed must have suspension and air brakes.

On 40km/h you can use the 4WD as front brakes and much simpler trailers, of course a 50km/h can use simple trailers but then you are limited to 40km/h57bac89844d24d783f8b456b_1472046504_web_es-ES.jpg57ab1d8744d24d9f5e8b4567_1470832093_web_en.jpg57962e7c44d24d270f8b4568_1470823171_web_en.jpg

If you scroll thru the videos posted in this thread, some are on major highways displaying trucks doing multiple tasks.

There are several differences between the way European and Scandinavian country's do things and the way it is done in the US.
In my mind there are several factors in this and I not going to even start to say which is better.
Hopefully Agvg and ptsg correct me if I'm incorrect on my assumptions.
For one the distances are extremely different from the US to Norway or Portugal;

With a total area of about 324,220 square kilometers (125,182 square miles), the country is slightly larger than the state of New Mexico.

Indiana and Maine are the states that are closest in size to Portugal.
The Encyclopedia of the Nations gives the total area of Portugal as 92,345 square kilometers [35,655 square miles]. This includes the two autonomous regions of the Azores [2,247 square kilometers/868 square miles] and Madeira Islands [794 square kilometers/307 square miles].
This total area places Portugal in between Indiana and Maine in size. Indiana has 94,327 square kilometers [36,420 square miles]. Maine has 91,652 square kilometers [35,387 square miles].

The roads shown on many of the videos are much narrower then ours, I believe the speed limits are also much less on those roads.
Also they use tractors and trailers to haul farm goods (silage and hay) were as many of the US farms have gone to dump trucks and
tractor trailers. Between drivers licenses and truck registration and regulations that doesn't seem to have happened over there.

Also in the US there does seem to be a trend to privatizing some of the DOT work such as mowing and plowing,
some of that is going to farmers while much is going to contractors.

As far as the snow plowing I think some of it may come from the huge use of ice melt products in this country,
so that drivers with ill equipped cars and pickups can have bare roads in the winter time.

Just my :2cents: I'd like to see more tractors used in municipal work with farmers getting the work and not highway contractors.
I also believe that the Scandinavian countries and Europeans treat their farms and farmers nicer then our cities towns and states do.
