Hawk protection for the flock.

I'm cool with the Hawks. Not with them feasting on my flock! The hen that was hit wasn't afraid to venture out and eat this morning. Now I'm wondering what line or strings are the best at being holdeup in the winter wind.

Not sure about lines or string, but I know the black plastic poultry netting can last for years (e.g. more than a decade), and if supported by a post (with a proper diameter topping) it can/will also withstand heavy snowfall. Most snow passes through, but enough can stick that a small diameter support post can end up being pushed through the top. ....doesn't take much to cheaply increase the diameter of the support as we ended up using the lid from 1 gallon ice cream pails (which was enough to spread the weight of the mesh/snow at my parents place in MN).

The hawks are in abundance here. You can hear their cries all day.
But they stay clear of the strings.
They will sit in the trees next to the run and never even try to go after the chickens now.

Thank you for this thread and reporting on its effectiveness. Could you link what you used for string?
