"Bob's your Uncle"

it is somewhat disturbing that "ten different Brits" didn't at least know what the phrase means. "Bob's your uncle" is a way of saying "you're all set" or "you've got it made." It's a catch phrase dating back to 1887, when British Prime Minister Robert Cecil (a.k.a. Lord Salisbury) decided to appoint a certain Arthur Balfour to the prestigious and sensitive post of Chief Secretary for Ireland.

Not lost on the British public was the fact that Lord Salisbury just happened to be better known to Arthur Balfour as "Uncle Bob." In the resulting furor over what was seen as an act of blatant nepotism, "Bob's your uncle" became a popular sarcastic comment applied to any situation where the outcome was preordained by favoritism.

As the scandal faded in public memory, the phrase lost its edge and became just a synonym for "no problem."

I always wondered what it meant. Used it, as do others, that I'm sure also haven't a clue of it's origin. Often there are several stories behind sayings and you don't know which one is aaccurate.

Actually saw something on Youtube tonight that claims stopping aging and even reversing it is possible. Has been proven in mice. Really amazing stuff.

Mice are the last thing that need to live longer

I follow the Tortoise Principle: "Slow and Steady". I've heard that it wins the race.

"Bob's your Uncle"

"no problem."

And the retort is. "and fanny's your granny"
I've also seen it as "your mother has a brother called Robert" but that sometimes takes too much thinking and they look at you sideways and walk away.

I like this, from Brother Dave Gardner:

"Say, a Democrat is somebody who expects somethin' fer nothin', and a Republican is somebody who expects nothin' fer somethin', an' a Independent is a cat that greases his own car," and "If I were bound by either party, well then, I might ferget America,"
