Bill- The two Canadian Weather sites that I access sometimes include the CONUS in their maps, but Canada does not expend the resources to parallel NOAA/NWS services. I will post that the Canadian CCM model has been one of the more reliable weather models so far this year. It's a major PITA to have that 49º cutoff. I agree about Toronto drivers. They are much worse than Beantown M@$$h*le$ and almost as bad as drivers around San Jose, Costa Rica.

BEF- I am in a similar situation. My iPhone defaults to NWS/Albany and my 2 Macs default to NWS/Boston-Norton. Once I got rid of my UHF/VHF antennae I no longer could get Albany/NY TV stations which had superior ProMets. Hopefully the fire stick that I got for my semi-smart TV will change things. Otherwise it will wait until we finally get broadband here someday. I am totally envious of your recent meals and desserts. My blood sugars probably elevate when I am reading what you are eating.

David- I am glad that you and Sophie had a good time at the social get-together.

Can anybody tell me what the difference is between a sweet potato and a yam?

In the USA there is no difference due too USDA regulations. From Bon Appetite:

"“Sometimes life puts you at a crossroads: Do you buy yams or sweet potatoes? They often look identical, but I've found that "yams" can be as low as 79 cents per pound, while "sweet potatoes" cost $2.49 per pound. So, what's the difference between a sweet potato and a yam? At most grocery stores, absolutely nothing. It's all a facade! "Most of the so-called yams you see in American grocery stores are actually orange-fleshed sweet potatoes," explains Mary-Frances Heck, author of new cookbook Sweet Potatoes (and former BA staffer). The reason for the name mix-up, she explains, is because Louisiana sweet potato growers marketed their orange-fleshed as “yams” to distinguish from other states' produce in the 1930s—and it stuck.

Real yams are entirely different root vegetables that are more like yucca in texture and flavor. They have bumpy, tough brown skin (that looks almost tree trunk-like) with starchy, not sweet flesh. Yams are more easily compared to the texture and flavor of white russet potatoes (with more fiber and complex carbs) and are best boiled and served alongside hearty braised meats. The neutrally-flavored yams are often used in Caribbean or West African cooking, and are difficult to find in the U.S.; sometimes you can pick them up at specialty grocery stores.”

Yams from Caribbean originally now 95 percent grown in Africa white colored inside more like potato, sweet potato flesh colored sweeter more natural sugar over 50 percent grown in North Carolina

Early start to the day before rain I finally fixed the wiring on the snow blower daughter's boyfriend took my heat gun back to me yesterday
, I gave him a small reminder on Christmas stopped at harbor freight and picked one up for him as one of his gifts.
Ronjhall had the dizziness with flowmax and rapaflo and neither worked very well anyway. Dr tried cialis low dose daily and seems to have done the trick. Only problem is explaining to the insurance that it is to Pee not for pleasure that's why it's a 30 day supply.
Mostly no CoQ10 it messed with triglycerides Dr took me off.
Temps dropping now 39 degs and sky clouding up guess rain is on the way.

The middle daughter and SIL came today (they had other plans for Christmas).. Wife wanted to use the Traeger so rolled it out of garage filled up with pellets, fired it up and put a Harbor Freight welding blanket over it to help maintain the heat.. It worked well, for those that might do this, remember the handle on the lid will be hot when you lift the welding blanket off.. remember to use a potholder.

Steaks were great, opened presents and then played games after dinner.

Step painted and temporarily in place. Will replace the 4x6 wooden blocks with concrete blocks. Not sure of final length yet.
Adjustments.JPG
Concrete basically done except the cleanup, then need to work on placement of the carport supports (red line). Setting too close to the cottage and the verticals become obtrusive, too far away and the end post is potentially a problem in tying into number 2, but I will have to modify regardless. Won’t do anything permanent until pieces are in hand (ships Jan 2). Verticals are spaced 5,5,5,5, & 4 ft. Similar to below with 1 more section

Adjustments.JPG
This last piece of concrete ties in pieces from 4 previous pours over 15 year period:

#1 was part of original construction to give a dry place out of the mud for generator, batteries, washer & dryer, etc.
#2 was for initial solar panel install, just 6 post slanted frame. Latter enclosed and roofed to house washer & dryer, water pump & tank.
#3 was part of driveway pour for walkway.
#4 was this summers driveway expansion.

A very different vision from 2004

Back home. Foggy drive. Brought back enough food for at least 2 more meals. I don’t think I mentioned white cake and red velvet cake. And the cookies. Here are some of her cookies.

Good evening all. 41F for the start, overcast sky, no fog and light wind, 3/4 in rain in bucket. Wind was moderate today, sun peaked out about noon, and high temp was 48F. Low for the day will be upper 30's at midnight. Was up for about 2 hours last night, and did not wake up for chapel this morning :(. Did do some consulting for work today, got the document system updated. Did watch Cowboys and nap this afternoon. No ride today and stepdaughter's boyfriend smoked brisket and spareribs for dinner :licking:
Bill, I never did work out whether I hated freezing rain or sleet worse. An inch of either brought STL to it knees for days.
Billy hope your rest was top quality
Ron, sorry meds did not work out.
Thomas, no e muffins? :confused2:
Ted things back to normal is a good thing right?
Buckeye, are you complaining about leftovers?
Thomas, thanks for pic, cute sign!
David thanks for pics and explanation, don't you wish you knew in '04 what you know now
Buckeye, was afraid to view pic full size, did not want the blood sugar to go up any more!!
prayers for all

It's 0245...up long enough to drink something

Snow is coming down pretty steadily...doesn't look like much accumulation though. The prediction has dropped from 8 inches or so down to 3-4 inches over the next day

Sure do. In fact I wish I knew better in Sep when George did the expansion. If I did he could have done what I did easier if not cheaper.

good morning,
temp here is 24°F and going to a high of 32. Wind E 26 gusting to 34 mph. Freezing rain warning in effect.
The hydro has been going off (like flipping a switch) for about 10 seconds and then back on again all night.

I have a town run to do today and that is about it. Energy conservation after that.

Have a safe day all

64 and drizzle heading up to 71 and showers and wind.

David, I knew there are vintages of wine, but didn't know same is true of concrete. :) You've certainly made your place comfortable and amaze me how you live off grid.

Ron, I love your bird pix. We had a lot of fog yesterday, too.

Put all the flattened boxes in the back seat floor of the truck yesterday, and threw all the bags of trash and recyclables into the bed and went to the dump (transfer station) yesterday...amazing what we produced over the Christmas week with guests. Since I was half way there, went to the gym, too.
