I hired a crew of Iraqis to build a metal canopy off the end of a large warehouse. They showed up with a trailer mounted generator that they used for a welder. Piece of cardboard with a slit cut for a helmet. A 3ft long piece of a metal retractable tape measure for a measuring device. They built a hammer from a steel gear and a piece of pipe to chip holes thru concrete to set the posts.

After a couple days I got the Engineers to come and jackhammer holes in the concrete. Gave them a 25ft Stanley retractable tape measure. They were grateful beyond words.

I watched a crew in Korea build a concrete block, 3 story building. They filled the blocks with concrete when they had the walls constructed. They built a wooden scaffold around the outside of the building. Then dumped the concrete on a piece of plywood on the ground level. Scooped it into buckets and handed it up the walls to fill them.

We have lost these things.

We might be going the way of the Romans.

Those tools were handmade as well. Roy Underhill would be proud.

I just stumbled upon it. Amazing craftsman with what appears to be an equal or greater attitude. Makes one realize we are just a small part of a big world...

That guy is my hero, you have to wonder what his motivation was.
I didn't live all that far from Dick, there's a LOT more to his story than the film clips show.

One, a lot of guys flew in food and other stuff to/for him, also he had a job and didn't stay in Twin Lakes all the time, and he also did gold mining in another location...

The films make it look like he went to Twin Lakes and lived there pretty much continuously for 35 + years, not even close!
