I'm always watching for stuff lying on the roadways. Funny, I see a pile of rubber bunjie cords, but don't ever recall seeing any straps or ratchets.

I wish ratchet straps were easier to unwind. Like a place to employ a large screwdriver or socket.

When they start getting hard to turn, take the strap out and spray some lubricant onto the spool. To unroll them when jammed I use a pair of water pump pliers on the spool end, or your big screwdriver turned sideways will also do it.

For tying down light objects such as my boat or canoe I use 3/8 or 1/2 inch nylon rope. I don't have to worry about them coming unhooked if the load shifts slightly.

Yeah, I try and spray them with a light lube like Crown. How nice would a butterfly, thumb turn be though?

My other peeve is that the straps are ALWAYS too long! So I roll up the ends and tie them with a wire tie. I'm paranoid about having the ends blowing in the wind or getting under a wheel!

I carry a bag of cheap zip ties. I coil the extra strap and run the zip tie through the coil and around it and then just cut them off when done. They are cheap and easy to use. And they never come off. Unless the strap has a place to fold it up and compress it between it and the load. Then I just do that. But a strap between 2 tie down points like a car or tractor the zip ties work great.

Me, too. The times I tried to use straps, I spent half my time stopping strumming. Once I made the mistake of running a strap parallel to the roof and it sounded like a helicopter landed on the roof.

I hate twisted straps, but that's the way to stop them from "strumming" just like a twisted car antenna.

I started to town yesterday down my little less than two lane country road. About a mile or so away, I hear something bounce and look back to see something moving in my mirror. Knew right away I'd left something on the roof of the car in the driveway and drove off, but I had no idea what. Turned around and drove back carefully watching not to run over whatever until I found it. There in the middle of the road lay my cell phone in the case. Just glad nobody else had come along.


Still works too.

I've found many tools lying in the road over the years... probably about the same amount as I"ve lost because I left them under the hood or on the frame.

Traditionally, isn't is supposed to be a cake on the roof?

That's what I call a "TRAP" and I try not to do it. Like putting tools on a tractor tire, or anywhere, they will get into trouble if you forget about them.

The end result of leaving a boom up on a lowbed. From about twelve years ago the owner didn't have his own lowbed so hired it out and the truck driver was suppose to know how load an excavator. He hit an overpass bridge over the TransCanada highway on the east side of Winnipeg.
