Yes, in fact, they did. There has been a phenomenal improvement in surface water quality since the implementation of the Clean Water Act in 1972. Prior to the restrictions on dumping pollution into rivers, streams and lakes, Lake Erie was not really safe to swim in and it was unsafe to eat fish caught in it, and the Cuyohoga River actually caught fire (on multiple occasions).

Are we talking about applying oil to roads or human diverted waste run off into rivers?

I think the environmental society has an obligation to use scare tactics to advance their agenda, which is what your link is. Who sprays a horse arena with some oil product that was procured solely on the fact it was the cheapest thing to buy. I'm sure the environmental society does not hold the person making those decisions responsible, only the substance, right?

When you want to get back to oil on roads, let me know.

I take it you and your neighbors dont have a well so used oil is ok?

personally my first thought would to save my surroundings and put a layer of crushed rock down.

The tar people build roads with is not the same as what used motor oil is.

Do people not understand asphalt is an oil based derivative? I have not seen one road be classified as a Superfund site.

Oil is carbon and hydrogen molecules, with some sulpher, nitrogen and oxygen. It's not like some chemical developed in a lab is being poured into the ground. All these are naturally occurring compounds.

I have a paved driveway which is oil based bitumen and rock. Yes I have a oil driveway and I let my kids play on it. There are no horns or anything growing, so I think I will stick with the oil.

My point is that I wouldnt put any kind of oil down on a road on my property. I cant believe the tar you mentioned would be great for my family, birds or animals to injest.
I have a dust free road without oils. Gravel works just fine.

I remember traveling the western U.S. as a child and all the Forest Service campgrounds had oil soaked gravel roads.

Times beach was using used oil on the roads ! The use on the arena is what finally brought it to light.

Extrapolate that out then...

Should by that logic the entire US have Superfund sites based upon both asphalt and oil sprayed roads?
