It should work , You might be able to bend the float rod to get a better reading on empty, How much does it cost?

Peter, The fuel sending unit is 4.5 ohms full and 97.5 ohms empty. The fuel gages I looked at the ohm readings closes to that was 0 ohm full and 90 ohms empty. Do you think the gauges with 0-90 ohm will work with the fuel sending unit? I would think the fuel gauge would not work perfect, but maybe good enough that I get some idea how much fuel is in the tank. Larry

I'd argue that is more than good enough. You will be under 5% error at both extremes, and given that most tanks bulge in the middle, I'd bet that the 1/4 to 3/4 range is even closer to right. Frankly I don't think the fuel gauge in a luxury car is closer than that. I know the one in my Kubota isn't....although the one in my vintage JD 2 cylinder might be - in spite of the strangly shaped gas tank. Back then those guys really cared.

I did just that..

Well after a lot of research on my John Deere 5320 fuel gauge not working I wound up getting the VDO 301-107 Fuel Gage from Summit Racing Equipment. After double checking the John Deere Fuel Sending unit l got 27.5 ohms empty reading. I calculated that the new fuel gauge should show approximately 3/4 full. After installing the gauge and completed the wiring I turned ignition to checked and the gauge registered just a little under 3/4 full. That is close enough for me. Once the tank fuel gauge registers 1/2 full I plan on filling tank to see amount of fuel it takes which should double check the fuel gauge. The specifications on the VDO 301-307 has 0 ohms empty 90 ohms full while the John Deere Fuel Sending Unit is 90 ohms empty 0 ohms full. This gauge cost me $50.00 and I would recommend this fix for anyone that has the expensive John Deere instrument cluster and the fuel gauge does not work.
Thanks for all the help and advice from members on Tractorbyne.

Our 5420's hour meter has been on the blink for a while.

Hello Kyle. There is a place called AG Express Electronics that will replace the hour meter if it is not repairable in the Instrument Cluster. They have a location in Iowa, Nebraska and Indiana. You can also install your own hour meter which should be fairly easy to do. Larry
