To answer your question; no. ABS has no effect on trail braking, which is braking to the apex. If you are in danger of locking your front wheel while braking to the apex, you're not doing it right. While learning from a pro racer at the track, I was shown up close how much faster a bike can be moving at maximum lean while trail braking, compared to rolling through the turn at maximum lean without trail braking. It's a dramatic (almost comical) difference.

Most of this has nothing to do with riding on the street, since there's very little similarity in that environment, but some of the skills are helpful to have on the street, like being able to brake while swerving and dealing with surprises.

I have ABS on one of my street bikes, and it could be a lifesaver if there's unseen gravel at an intersection... or just a panic braking situation. I'm certainly not beyond making a stupid mistake, and ABS can be a good thing.

SPEAKING of gravel at intersections, why in the hooey do rural road departments put sand all over the road in winter weather? I can't stand that! For the ONE hour it might improve traction during an icing situation, it leaves a ridiculous mess and dangerous lack of traction on the pavement for months after. God I hate that!

ABS really only comes into play in a straight line panic stop.

And yes I hate the sand on the roads as well.. Here where I am the soil is all , or mostly, sand.. so every time we get a downpour lots of it gets washed out into the streets.

Here is a great video to what I'm referring to on the HD Touring Bike to complete the stop. This technique works great and gives you a much more controlled stop during the last few feet of a planned stop. But once again, feel free to do as you please.

This tip will help you stop a motorcycle with more control - YouTube

So as per that video.. those three mistakes he made in his first run were GLARINGLY obvious. Now the first one, taking both feet off to put on the ground (downriggers) , he said that was a mistake because it didn't allow the rider to use BOTH brakes to come to a stop.... and then he turns around and says to not use the front brake... again not using BOTH brakes to come to a stop.. what the heck??
And who is that guy.. just some guy that likes making you tube videos?? Does he have any accreditation or does he just make stuff up on the fly?

Clutchless shifting can remain a dirt/racing thing for me.

Is clutchless shifting taught in M/C rider classes, past or present? Street or dirt? Racing or not?

I always used the clutch (dirt, street, or car), but with my current racing shifter kart, I unlearned that. 1st gear only.

My bro had a Freightliner truck, and he did clutchless shifting in that, but the trans was very accommodating. That is not true of all non-sequential synchronized gearboxes. I have not run into worn-out sequential shifting mechs in my M/C repair experiences.

I don't use a clutch to shift my 7 speed goldwing. In fact there is no hand clutch in the automatic double clutch transmission. It is still possible to manually shift with paddle shifters.

Not taught in the MSF courses..

He says to complete the stop with the rear brake. Are we watching the same video? Also, did you read the comments under the video how much this has helped people control their stop better? And he is an MC Instructor.

MCrider was founded by Kevin Morris, a Motorcycle Safety Foundation and Total Control certified instructor located in Dallas / Fort Worth, TX.

He knows what he is doing and all of his video's are free

Well you go ahead and ride like the you tube guy, I will not.. I too am a long time MSF instructor, and his thinking is not in the MSF curricula..

You have a good one and ride safe..

Question on linked brakes....

Are you able to switch linking Off, on any street bikes today, or are they all permanently On ?

Riding where I do, there are times when I want zero front brake with my street bike. I should have a look at what they are doing on dual-sports today.

One approach may be to use some kind of servo mechanism, to activate the other brake.... should be relatively easy (electrically) to set up Selectable Linking, but I don't know of a manufacturer doing it.
