If you want to go down that rabbithole please start a different thread, this one should be about how to weather this crisis. Or non-crisis depending on what you read. :)

But here's some Conspiracy Theory to get you started in that different thread: Wuhan and Harvard each have bio labs and they cooperate with each other. Back in January the principal researcher at Harvard and two of his lab assistants were detained. One assistant was found to be a lieutenant in the Chinese army, one was arrested at the airport carrying bio samples. And that principal researcher was found to be drawing a larger salary from the Chinese government than his Harvard salary. I haven't seen any mention of this since.

Ok take that to Friendly Politics to explore that line of inquiry. This thread would go all to h- if discussion of this distraction intruded here. Emphasis here should be on what can we do to protect ourselves.

If you do take that to FP please provide a link. I'm curious about that topic, too.

This would have been a good first post for that phantom thread which you mention. If you will move it for that purpose, I will then delete this post.

Thank you in advance.

Please don't tell my friend to take something to a "different" thread and then talk about it here.

Mike doesn't need to take anything to a different thread. Maybe you do.

I should have read down. You handled that better than I did.

I wonder how long this thing might last. That article seemed to be saying it could stretch out for a year. Its been going for two months or so in china. It will be pretty hard to make plans if it stretches out for a long time.

It strikes me that it would be a lot more helpful to tell us how to use n-95 masks properly than to advise against using them.

WHO advises people who wish to wear a mask to place the mask ç”°arefully to cover mouth and nose and tie securely to minimise any gaps between the face and the mask, avoid touching the mask while youæ±*e wearing it, and dispose of masks as soon as they become damp or humid. When removing the face mask, WHO recommends that people é›»o not touch the front but remove the lace from behind.

I think I have a couple of n-95 masks in the shop. I can't remember what project I got them for but in any case knowing how to use them properly would be useful in the shop too.

Chris

I've got a box of 3m 8210 (n95) masks and a 3m 7000 series with the canisters.

The most recent news seems to be talking about the need for a 14 day quarantine. Other than the obvious need to have 14 days of food on hand I would want

1. Prescription medications
2. Meds to relieve symptoms like Advil and anti diarrhea meds
3. Electrolytes
4. Entertainment

Thankfully for most of us living rural in this group we can still go out to our property and work.

If I was confined to the property for 14 days I have plenty of projects to keep my busy.

We have set aside food supplies to get us through. Meds are always kept a month in advance anyway. Need to get some otc meds stocked up. Also need to keep the diesel cans full so I can get those projects done.

Work wise I can do most of what I need to do from home if push came to shove.

The mask stuf is more involved than that.

There are essentially two categories; those that filter virus very well [A95], and regular masks that dont. The A95 require more effort to breathe thru. They are are worn by the infectious disease teams who take rest periods and change their mask, never re donning the previous. It would be very difficult to wear an A95 for general protection on the street or at work.

. . . The regular masks, as said, are more to offer courtesy protection to others around you. Comparatively they filter poorly but you can breathe pretty easy. They can be valuable tho, to greatly reduce outgoing contamination from the wearer. -- Real GOOD. ... The rub is for the well wearer of a mask who doesnt observe protective equipment protocols. - They may not make the connection that the outside of a filter accumulates a concentration of contaminants of all kinds. - They may use the same mask all day, take it on and off, touch the outside of the mask  over and over - - and then maybe rub their eye. If theyve been near Corona they may have a concentration great enuf to infect themselves.
.

They are hard to find and prices have gone up 300%-400% recently. CDC doesn't currently recommend them which is baffling. :confused2:

U.S. health officials say Americans shouldn稚 wear face masks to prevent coronavirus here are 3 other reasons not to wear them - MarketWatch
It is due to the above linked reason. Think of the false sense of security not knowing the nuances - that can be really important. Think of the the Ebola PPE problems even with medical professionals. Real hands on training is necessary and there would still be mistakes. Better to open the PPE window slowly with the general public.

BTW, An A95 mask will wear you out quicker than you think in just warm weather, even with light activity. Thats why professionals are supposed to take rest periods -- and probably have to so they dont keel over.

That article does seem more credible than the conspiracy nonsense. For those who didn't go read it, it says the origin is nearly certain to be natural in origin. So most likely, the wet market scenario.

Not the 'mad scientist' conspiracy theory that some are theorizing.

I think we need to be aware of the various theories (and discuss them dispassionately!) to resist being fooled by the less likely ones.
