One year with the Chevrolet Bolt EV: Takeaways from my immersion into all-electric driving GeekWire

I have never seen a Bolt but then I have only seen one white and one gray Leaf to recognize them. Sounds like a Bolt can serve as the only family car. Renting a gas car seems to solve really long trips concerns.
I've been following the largest Bolt owner's group, since before they were released. Lots of good information. If it were a little bigger I could carry all the stuff I need to take back and forth between home and ranch, but I reluctantly concluded it doesn't have the capacity I need in order to replace my elderly Outback.

Stored energy - heres a new article on a just-approved project. Hopefully this will be online this year.

Humongous Tesla Battery Plant Approved In California Is 10x Bigger Than Worlds Biggest Battery Plant

=== excerpts ===

"...10x bigger than Teslas Hornsdale energy storage project (1.2 GWh versus 129 MWh), which was 3x bigger than any other battery storage facility at the time it was built."

and

"In 2018, it was reported that the battery at Hornsdale made back a third of its cost in a year".

So they are going to mine, and build tons of lithium ion batteries. Yea, real green.

So? No worse than iron, aluminum, silver, or gold.

And especially with so many lithium batteries in one place, when cells reach end of life the are available for recycling. Used cell is a richer source of lithium than ore from a mine.

Carlos Ghosn, Now a Fugitive, Was an Electric-Car Visionary | Time

Nissan has over a 70 year history with EV's. Sadly they seemed to have peaked before their time to shine the brightest. Our 2016 Nissan Leaf SL is an awesome EV except for the low number of years that their battery packs seem to last in some climates. They came on the market in late 2009 with the Leaf with around at 70-80 mile range but new cost with rebates and tax credits often could be had for about $20K when Telsa came on the market with a $100K car the Roadster.

Nissan when on to pump out about 400,000 first generation Leafs where Tesla pumped out 2450 first generation car the Roadster. Basically the Leaf was the same car in 2017 as it was in 2009 yet the battery life issue was not resolved over those years.

From 2003-2008 Telsa built and sold only about 2450 of the Roadster cars. Unlike Nissan Tesla modified hardware and software continuously as they still do in 2020. Tesla used this period of low volume building of EV's to learn how to build EV cars and battery packs from ground up and understood they had to build all of the key components in house if they were going to be successful. The Model S was the results of the years of painful learning how to do the EV thing.

Different strokes for different folks makes for different long term results. It seems like the CEO with the most skin in the game is most likely to come out with the best net results long term.

Tesla has finished clearing trees at Giga Berlin site - Electrek

I always wondered how Elon Musk thought he could pull off quickly building a Mega factory in Europe but he covered that in a pod cast last month.

It turns out BMW was going to build a factory on this site back in like 2000 and a lot of the environmental impact and permitting work paperwork already existed as a starting point. Most likely the local governments that missed getting the BMW plant 20 years ago are happy to be getting Tesla to build on that site. BMW got some push back on the trees and went with it a different location. With Tesla now leading the EV trend I am sure some know some old line companies may becoming smaller and hope Tesla brings more long term jobs.

Elon Musk: Tesla Autopilot | Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast - YouTube

This is the first part of a two part interview with Elon Musk that deals with the human mind and artificial intelligence and how these to will blend at some level some day.

While this subject have not be of interest to many if it is of interest to you give the first part a shot and then if you see it is of interest watch part two perhaps. Elon Musk clearly thinks beyond the present.
