Where do you buy your metal stock?

I'm not buying what I would call stock, but small cut pieces are real reasonable at Metal Supermarket.
So far, without asking for special attention, accuracy is fine 'sharpie' width - close enough!
I'm saving a bit from the smallest lengths at HD, and already cut to length.

Up here I use Metal Supermarket, they will cut to your specs. They are right around the corner from work. If the piece won't fit in whatever vehicle I am driving I can always get one of our Northbound floats to haul it.

I'm in cottage country and lots of slat springs get tossed out.
They generally are made from nice angle stock.
I keep appropriate tools in my car to dismantle as they don't stay around long.
Bet I have at least 10-12 lengths in my stock.
Those bed spring angles make great bases for power tools.

But for a bigger assortment we have Princess Auto that has a decent supply and I do have a steel warehouse about 15 miles from me, but pricy.

we have a place around here called metal source, they sell anything you want pretty much, if they dont have it they will get it for you relatively quick, they sell small stuff under 3 feet for scrap prices by the lb so i go there for lotsa stuff, nice to get some short pieces of things for really good prices for making stuff or braces, brackets, supports, like the hitch for my winch, i paid 1 dollar for the piece of square tubing for it

I go to my local welding supply company. Much more selection and much lower prices.

Yep, local welding supply place has anything and everything. If you have any local welding shops, check with them. Much cheaper
and easier to work with than the big box stores. And a much better selection of goods.

Well, Rob, a lot depends on where you are located. If "Middle MN" is near the Twin cities, you have a lot of sources you can go to. But if you mean Alexandria, then I won't be much help...

Discount Steel (now called Coremark Metals) has been the main go-to for a long time in Mpls. They keep a ton of shorts and drops around. Used to be cheap for drops, until they started to realize the gold mine they were sitting on for smaller users. Then they built a pretty new showroom and jacked all their prices way up. But they will deal with small users, which is nice. If you just want a 10' stick cut in half, they will do it for a reasonable charge. They also can do cutting, bending, etc for a charge. A whole variety of things. The key is to NOT use their website for anything other than information as the web prices are even worse. You are better off calling ahead and having them pull an order for you that you pay for on site when you PU. Much better pricing that way.

There are also a few Metals Supermarkets scattered around the metro, and I have used them a few times also. Same deal - don't use the website to order as the prices are far worse. Just call direct to the branch you want. They will also deal nicely with small users and can cut, etc. I was quite satisfied with them, but they were less convenient for me.

But for me, the best place has become Steel Towne as I am just over the border, behind the Cheddar Curtain. They have a main facility near Eau Claire and a branch close by in River Falls that I use. The RF location has expanded a lot over the past several years. Their prices are WAAAAY better than the other 2 I listed and they are great at dealing with small users. You say I want 2' of this angle, they fire up the plasma and hack it off for you. If you want an exact cut, they can put it on the bandsaw too, but they charge for that. They can do some forming and welding too. If you call ahead, they can get basically anything you want in a couple days. I used them for the 304 SS for all my railings here as they were almost half the price I was quoted from Discount/Coremark. Yes, that much lower. And they are great at customer service. Here is a shot of the railing project from that load of steel. Now this was a sizeable order, so I did send around for quotes from a few shops, and these guys always win. Yes I love working with these guys!

Edit: And yes I have bought from menards/HD/etc for small stuff, which is fine for very small orders, if they have what you need, and especially if you need it quick.

I'm west of the metro. Out towards Hutchinson, but not quite that far. The twin cities is doable but I'd rather find something on the west side of the metro.

The places you describe sound a lot like the machine shop I go to now. They sell full pieces, shorts/drops, and they'll cut for a fee. It's really fine, other than the hours. I don't recall the price per pound I've paid in the past though... last time I got some was last summer. How much do you pay per pound at the ones you mentioned?

Thanks,
Rob

Most of what I have bought in recent years has been 304 SS, and my last load was last July for the railings. It came out to near $2.40/lb for the whole batch, but it was a few hundred pounds total. I don't have anything recent on mild steel to compare.

I'd search around your area a bit. I was a bit surprised to have a place in River Falls that was so good, but maybe you will find something closer that works too. The hours are never going to be great at these places for hobbyists as they are 9-5 industrial businesses. I know Metal Supermarkets has an outlet in the SW or W suburbs.

I have a fab shop friend who orders anything I need for less than I could get it for and I get to dig in the drops and pay scrap price. Just lucky I guess.

I like Metal Supermarkets. And they have all kinds of metal not just steel. Mine is open Saturdays.
