Welding Web Down?

Well that's assuming their revert goes smoothly.

I like the idea of doing something beyond just welding---more on the fabrication, build-it-yourself, home built, creator lines which would encompass welding of course. Thoughts?

Websites & forums are easy. It's the community that's the hard part.

Lots of work maintaining & properly backing up forums. But a lot more luck or possibly skill in getting the right community that will sustain itself.

This is where I feel that a third welding 'community' may be difficult to muster. Are 'we' already a TBNer? WW, too? Now all three? :scratchchin:

We have our projects and other forums here. What I think we could use to help ourselves is to post in the right forum, and to Make a title relevant.

"Haas-Kamp conversions 3 Ph - 1 Ph Miller CP-200, CP-300" Now that's a real thing, and if I posted it that'd be my title.

btw, I finally wisened up three guys with Miller 3 Ph welders to get 'em going on 1Ph. Gary and Neil have CP-200s & each need 2 60uf 440v motor run caps and 2 15 ohm 5w bleeder resistors. (drain caps at shutdown) Pat needs 4 ea 65uf 440v and 4 15 ohm 5w resistors for his CP-300. Neil is the Electrician by trade so gets to operate on 'em vs me. :) Pat is the Welder by trade who can verify results and show the others how to set the machines up. (Gary is the guy that knows me & I thot his garage queen should go to work.:drink:) These are nice 100% duty-cycle shop welders .. for 3PH stuff. :)

Y'know, 3 Ph is easy because there are so many ways to make it so. In a RPC the caps are to balance the legs to the load. In the H-K conversions the three coils (Uh, it's 3PH, remember) are rewired out of phase and the caps help align the phases as fed by supply power. The 'resonance' of the load then works as a typical 1Ph welder, input and output. (the whole idea, you knew that)

Anyway, y'uns didn't need welding web to see all this. I bet it's there somewhere too, but a third place to share it ...

Things are changing... you just don't see the new server because they haven't rerouted the WeldingWeb.com domain to it.

So maybe, soon?

Thinking things over a bit.

There are, what, 4-5 manufacturers of welders?
compared to how many tractor manufacturers?

In any community you probably have hundreds of tractor owners be it w/e hobbyists or farmer types, but how many welding/fabrication shops?

Any welding supply house I have visited are extremely independent, like even their hours are not user friendly.
The bottled gas guys even more so.
All to say, IMO, it is a narrow close knit community.

The more thoughts I have on the subject/trade is that you might be better off simply expanding welding discussions within TBN as you already have the attention of the majority of casual welders.

Now the real steel warehouses are few and far between and even the smaller retail types are disappearing (at least in my area) so the sponsors would be slim.

Sure, I weld so I'm interested but not to simply hear Ford vs Chev or the best helmet debates nor to be ignored if I post a basic beginner question.

It is my opinion that “beginner questions posted on WW are ignored” is a myth.

There will always be haters everywhere on line but WW does have a large group of talent that are willing to share and help.

True enough... but unfortunately some are too proud of themselves to take the time to teach others and would rather just be a jerk.

And then you have some who can answer a question but hesitate because they know their post will just get lost among all the other bogus answers posted buy folks that don't really have a clue what their talking about.

Haha. That is what happens to me on TBN when I think about answering questions on the Owning and Operating and Attachments thread. I gave up a while ago.

From my experience I agree completely. I have dealt with the 4 or 5 in town for over 50 years throughout various name changes, acquisitions, and relocations. They collectively suck.

I enjoy this TBN setup we have here. When ever I feel the need to hear that I don't know what I'm talking about I go over to WW and post something.

Guess I asked for it.

...you don't know what you're talking about ;) :D

Awww, ya beat me to it! Yes, you had that coming...

I agree with Big Barn - Most of the time you get good answers from knowledgeable people on WW, IME. Several years back it was much rougher and there were some very grouchy individuals who would berate newbies for their normal questions. I don't see that much anymore, but there are certainly ones that do not suffer fools gladly (if you won't listen, then they will tell you where to go), and there are a couple jerks still around, but that is life. I suspect many people's perceptions of WW were formed further in the past and may not have evolved with time the same as WW seems to have. Plus - If you are very thin-skinned, the internet is not the place for you...WW or anywhere

...I suspect many people's perceptions of WW were formed further in the past ...
I thought the scorn I saw was just because my first inquiries were "How do I make this $72 HF 'Mig100' (AC flux) welder work at least as well as the 40 yo AC stick welder I can use reasonably well? I thought this was modern technology and easy to weld with???"

Nothing but scorn. And lots of other beginner 'weldors' asking the same question with the same replies. I gave up and returned the welder for refund after I noticed a large number of them as 'open box special' on Ebay.

Actually the scorners were right. A year later someone posted that those cheap welders now worked properly. A really bad batch of flux wire had doomed months of them, caused them to be returned for refund. I went back and bought the same model, it worked as expected (crude but worth the $72), so no longer a need to ask dumb questions on WW. But those more experienced guys were right, that generation of HF 'Mig' cheap welders were simply unusable with the trial spool of flux wire.

Sorry about long-winded. This shelter-in-place order already is a PIA. I'm stuck in town with nothing to do here.

I used to poke around there when I first got my MIG but found TBN welding forum more to my liking. No question lots of experience and knowledge on WW but I didn't like the tone. Maybe it is much improved now. Hope so.

Which town you stuck in?

My wife's family is all down in Sonoma county, what with the fires the last few years and now this whole mess, I'm not sure why they still live there.

Eh, there still are jerks there, and you can certainly run into them, but I joined there over 10 yrs ago, after lurking for a year or two, and I can assure you that it was FAR worse back then. Heck, there are jerks on TBN too, but fortunately few and they tend to stay in "friendly" politics for the most part...except when they emerge to destroy the Corona virus threads...

   / Welding Web Down? #298
There are jerks everywhere. You notice them more wherever you spend the most time online.

That TBN is where so many people go to avoid them is why most of us are here, or I'm in the wrong room. (let me down easy if so)

I'm saying that we can prove to each other that "We don't need no steenkeeng WW," and that they're lucky that so many of our guys will share with 'em.

Admitting I'll still try to finish registering there.

I must be the exception. I rarely stray from Projects and Tasks although I may have got one of the Corona Virus threads shut down .....
