I looked in the LA1153 loader WSM.

More complicated than I would have thought with special jigs needed to install the seals.

Also this caution: Do not turn (roll) the piston seal as you install it.

See attached pages.

I also look for a loader WSM on Kubotabooks.com

I found LA344 344S

Index of Kubotabooks/Loaders and buckets/

Its seal servicing procedure is the same using special jigs.

I didn't see your post Dave until after I posted the above. Not feeling very reassured after a quick skim of what you found but I need to study it further. That special tool adds to the frustration for sure.

Thanks for sourcing that information.

I just spoke with a tech rep from Messick's who is going to send me the applicable pages from the service manual for a LA463. Said he did not think there were any special tools needed for my model except for the external collar that screws into the cylinder, and a pipe wrench or channel lock can be substituted for that. I'll post what I learn in case somebody else ever chooses to reseal one of these.

Here is an email from Messick's re the LA463 loader hydraulics.

Stuart,
Good afternoon.
I apologize, it does state to use special tools(slide jig and correcting jig) to install the expander and piston seal.
However, it instructs you or us as a dealer to make the tools.

We do not have these tools.
Our technician informs me that he would heat the expander in water or oil and install it manually into the piston groove.
He would then install the piston seal over the expander.
And then he would put the piston with seals in a refrigerator for a few minutes, which will shrink the piston seal over the expander
and allow the installation into the cylinder barrel.

I hope this helps, if you need more information, please let me know.

Thanks, Tim

P.S. He included pages S-14 through S-17 of the LA 463 service manual. View attachment LA463 piston seals.pdf

I decided there is no better time than now to change the transmission fluid. I have the operators manual indicating where the two drain plugs are under the transmission, but there is nothing about how to evacuate the loaders or three-point hydraulic systems. While I do have the two bucket cylinders in my shop while I put new seal kits in them, there still remains fluid in the two boom lift cylinders. Can someone give me some tips on how to get as much fluid out of the system as possible?

Note: I picked up Super UDT2 and filters today and compared the fluid color. The old fluid is much darker.

4WD. I looked again and there are 4 drain plugs. I failed to turn the page. Thanks for the 'catch'.

Moship, I guess making a mess comes with the territory. I'll bleed the boom cylinders off.

Is the fluid contaminated with water? If not I wouldn't worry about the little bit left in the lift cylinders.

Lowering the 3pt and loader lift cylinders all the way will get the most fluid out, the amount of the remaining fluid you get isn't worth the hassle.

No, there is no water. You are probably right about it not being worth it, especially when there are only two of the four loader cylinders with the old fluid. Avoiding the inevitable mess will likely drive my decision.
