That's how the remote would work for mine also, it's just nice to only have to hit the open and it'll stop at a known height.When using my remotes, tap the button to start the door up, tap the button at any time stops the door, tap the button again and it closes.
My uncle's shop has a single door for 12 bays with 4-6 techs working at any given time so the door gets quite a workout. (shop has A/C and heat so stays closed up almost year round).
The door is set to a height so most cars/trucks can come in/out but saves on wear and tear and keeps from losing all that nice climate controlled air

I did mine that way because I'm lazy lol
