Like he said there is not room between teeth to get a hammer and punch in a straight line. You need a short punch and a hydraulic ram (Porta-Power) to punch straight. The pins are hollow so get all the rust and dirt out of the inside first. That will allow the rust busting process work better. Take a cutting torch with 00 tip and burn part of it out from the inside after you can see through it. That will let it shrink some when punching. A little slice in the existing won't hurt anything. Just clean the hole out to clean metal before installing the new one.

Another option would be clamping down extremely tightly with a large pair of vice grips on the punch and then hitting the vice grips with the hammer.

I see good potential in this thread. It might be the next "stuck oil drain plug" adventure!

Many of those pins are actually two roll pins bonded together with rubber,
you can beat on the inner one all day and it will do nothing.
You will need to drive or press on the outer pin.

Hope and pray it's not one of those pins that are wound up like a Cinnamon Twirl! I see a lot of them on equipment that comes from overseas...Europe in particular.

If I wanted to remove that pin I just light an acetylene torch & cut/blow the roll pin out. I agree with other posters to drive out properly one needs correct type roll-pin punch. Mayhew builds a very good quality of roll-pin punches.

heat with propane torch until hot enough to melt candle wax oe bees wax into pin hole completely through. hit pin. use 2 people. one with driver held with with vice grip and other person with 8 lb sledge hammer. repeat as necessary. works on my 45 year old backhoe. also rusted in bolts. the wax lubricates the roll pin sides better than any spray can stuff. wax will wick in around roll pin.

I would just drill it.

I know it is hardened steel, but as any machinist can tell you, it is all about rock, paper scissors...whatever is harder is going to work. So get a carbide or diamond drill bit. Sometimes buying them is cheaper in the end.
