And when you watch the video, and all those hundreds of young men and women shouting, cheering, and pressing into a large crowd to cheer the captain.... all of them are breaking protocol to contain this virus, doing exactly what they should not be doing. Gathering in a group, spraying water vapor droplets out of their mouths as they shout and cheer, and breathing in deeply. And while it may sound cruel and heartless, there's something to be said for chain of command, and lack of discipline, as is displayed right there. Young people think they're invincible, and old people need to lead them to do the right thing. That wasn't the right thing for that moment and that situation.

I suspect that physical distancing is impossible on a ship. I would think you need to implement epidemic protocols very early and maintain isolation of the ship strictly. Can you imagine trying to decontaminate an aircraft carrier? How do you insure that the crew you put back on the ship is disease free? How long will the ship be out of commission? I would be very surprised if the military hasn't thought about epidemics.

Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic, CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, this morning:

“Here in Ohio, we have started very, very early,” Mihaljevic said. “Our governor has been very proactive, the measures of the social distancing were implemented early. What I can share with you, at least over the last four or five days, as you know, as you can imagine, we measure the number of patients who are infected and track it on a daily basis. We are seeing some encouraging signs, meaning that the number of patients who are infected here in Ohio seems to be relatively stable or it is growing at a relatively slow pace.”

At least another week’s worth of data would be needed to determine whether Ohio has flattened the curve, but the physician warned that the federal government’s 30-day timeline for slowing the spread was overly optimistic — even if everything goes as hoped.

“It really depends about how effective our measures of social distancing are going to be,” Mihaljevic said. “That will be, on one side, dependent upon when are they implemented, and the big unknown is how far was virus spreading before social distancing was put in place? So the timeline is really challenging.”

“Our modeling predictions are telling us that if we are able to flatten the curve, to some extent, we are expecting the peak of this disease, at least here in our home state of Ohio, to occur sometime between mid-May and mid-June, with a gradual decline in the number of cases towards mid- to late July. This is the best-case scenario.”

Coronavirus 'may cause brain damage' as dangerous swelling found in 'confused' patients

This is the first I have heard about COVID-19 related brain damage. Hope it is fake news.

The daughter rode in with us this morning. After dropping the wife at the hospital we went to Kroger's then Walmart. Both were more or less well stocked. I waited 2 days for the first of the month rush but both stores at 7:30 then 8 am were busy. WM staff was putting up a huge maze at the front door for crowd management and spacing concerns I expect. Few had their faces covered be it shoppers or staff. We did and that is going to take some time to adjust to but I do not plan to be off the place and out of the car without a mask going forward.

Most of our trips are from the house and to the ER entrance and back. Side trips are starting to feel too risky.

The post by the nurse that was helping in NY drove home a lot of points we need to listen to. I expect locally we are 6-8 weeks from any peak since we still officially on have 6 or so positive cases. The hospital does now have one floor that only is for corona virus patients. I am very thankful that we moved back from Memphis in 1987 and are only 15 miles from work, animal and human food sources. The Nissan Leaf is letting me stay out of gas stations but do need to make a gas/diesel run just in case things start to go south in a major way or get down sick.

Panic is dumb but easy to do. Being prepared helps hide the panic button. Best wishes to all.

Any virus, including common cold viruses, can very rarely cause encephalitis (brain damage) and additionally there are some equally rare autoimmune reactions that cause neurological disease (brain damage). I haven't seen anything that suggests that this coronavirus is any worse than others in this regard.

Whenever there is an epidemic with literally millions of cases (remember the reported numbers WAY underestimate the real number of cases in the community) of a viral infection there will be examples of these 1 in ten thousand or 1 in 100,000 type events. It just isn't anything an individual can avoid though as 1) there is no prevention other than avoiding getting infected and 2) treatments are only modestly effective. No sense in worrying as there is nothing you can do about it and the odds of getting such a complication are literally about the same as winning a big lottery.

I think you'll find that doctors - particularly doctors involved in public health like Dr. Fauci or Ohio's Director of Public Health, Amy Acton - tend to hedge their bets as far as any specific time frames go.

They recognize the virus itself gets a vote.

They ae not the only ones though...even the likes of Dr Oz and so many others say the same thing. So who are we to believe or follow? People like the guy who derailed a train because a hospital ship looked suspicious?

That being said, when it comes to contagious or communicable deceases how can properly followed isolation not stop it? Unless its being distributed by other means deliberately. Like dumped from a plane in the upper atmosphere. Or even distributed by vial from people around the globe.
