What other choice is there? An aggressive dog on your property must be addressed. In rural America, we shoot them. I love dogs but there is a line. This is a rural living forum....what city folks can do is immaterial. We call them idiots for a reason...they call us hillbillies for a reason.

Maybe an education allows some to think before shooting??? Maybe...

Totally agree.

People often react less than positively when they find out we have 7 kids. I dont care, they are loved, well fed and cared for 100% by the efforts of me and my wife. We never used a babysitter other than her mom, who passed away in 2013... no welfare check, just two parents taking raising our kids seriously. Our dogs stay home, horses, cows, goats and sheep stay in their fields. The only thing we might catch some flack on is barn cats, there's a fluctuating number of them, as they come and go, but they are well fed.

It's simply a matter of being responsible.
I agree. Number of children has nothing to do with it. Some folks are not responsible enough to have one child. My wife is one of nine children and all but one are productive members of society.

I have a degree in Engineering and a Masters degree in business. Likely more educated than you. Was CEO of two companies so not just book smart. Being a hillbilly does not make one stupid.

You go pet the aggressive dog...I will shoot him.

I know my solution works. KISS The last S usually stands for stupid...but you you know that...it can also stand for smart.

Plinkin' critterz shows common sense ain't so common.

Yeah, when you are facing down an animal that wants to hurt you, keep that in mind. Right.

Interesting thread. No doubt there is such a variance here due to personal experience. To me the OP did what he should have done for he had promise to do that and to do other wise makes him a liar.

Have never killed a dog other than it ran out in front of my car. However would do so in a minute to protect a person or my property. If my dog were to threaten or kill (for no reason) would understand him being killed.

For those who think there is never justification to kill a dog you need to see the scars of torn and ripped limbs, faced disfigured and learn of lives lost to dogs trained to fight that are allowed to run loose either because the owner does not care or does not secure them. In our tv viewing area about ever month or so there is a case. Had young lady from there visit up few years ago and she showed part of the major rip on her leg by a bull dog she had to kill with her pocket knife. No knife she probably would have been killed. Had business dinner in February with a lady who following the dinner was visiting her niece who had been moved to a large city hospital due to dog attack. There have been older ladies and young children killed by dogs. Much more often than is even believable. If you think there is never justification to kill a dog, cat, cow or horse, just name the animal..do an internet search and you will find that animal has killed someone who was defensive. God gave the MAN responsibility to provide for and to protect his family. To do otherwise is a sin. If you don't like that take it up with him when you have your meeting with him. Killing should never be taken lightly, death is final. Death is serious.

I wanted a dog for 20 years before I finally felt that I could properly care for one. After she was gone I waited another year because I was travelling a lot and didn't have time to train one. I have little tolerance for people who get an animal they can't take care of.
I also never had kids for the same reason...

I had a couple of the neighbors dogs that kept coming in my shop and harassing my cat and taking her food and even the cat dish. I chased them off but wuld wait till I was not there and do the same thing again. I caught them in there one time and I had a bottle rocket and set it off after them. They now avoid my shop and the cat.

I had a neighbors dog on my property, snarling and barking at my wife on the porch. Two days in a row. The first day I thought, well, mistakes happen. The second day was the same though. I didnt know for sure where it belonged but chased it about 1/2 mile with a lot of noise and a baseball bat. It went home and me with it. The lady came out of the house. I told her to keep her dog out of my yard. I didnt make any threats but I was really definite about it. No further problems.

WOW, a dog snarling at my wife on my porch would be a dead dog the first time!!

I think my wife would snarl at the dog and it would run away, never to be seen again.
