All these discussions on property boundaries and trespassing do not take into regional state laws.
I'm not a lawyer, though I do sleep with one at night, but I know the laws in Vermont were that I could generally hunt on other peoples land UNLESS it was POSTED whereas in Mississippi all land is "NO TRESPASSING" by default.

Good point. My land is posted. One offender didn't like the signs and stole one. I talked to him and made it clear that it was my fence not his and he is not to damage the fence, take anything from it or add anything to it. I think what got him under control was his wife saying leaving the neighbor alone. (When I find a critter, their kid might like I go to the door and ask if they would like to see x. Everybody was enthralled with the new born fawn.) Still no one has stolen the posts with purple paint. And in Kansas, a fence is considered prima facie evidence of no trespassing allowed.

When I was younger, back in leather helmet days, :laughing:I grew up on a small farm with a lake. I remember when I was a little crumb cruncher my dad throwing a FIT when the fox hunters came though our property. It was always led by a rich snotty woman and fellas,,,,, they’d tear everything up that wasn’t welded in place. The foxhounds would come into our houses if you left a door open! They’d go after the ducks, the swans, the chickens, our dogs and cats, you name it!
My dads answer was to surround our entire property with 4’ high T-post heavy barb wire fence and no trespassing signs. Very effective.

So this same ol hag was fox hunting with all the horses and dogs about 10 miles away and she had a road blocked. So here comes a PA state trooper. Now this was back in about 1970. The only people who lived in my area were white people. This state trooper was an African American officer. He found the ol gal in charge and approached her on foot, dogs running around him barking, horses running around lots of commotion. So he tells the old lady she needs to move this function off the road immediately. Well she takes her riding crop and smacks him in the face with it!!!
It made the newspapers boys! I ain lyin!!
Turns out she was the wife of a United States District Court Judge. She only had to make a public apology to the cop.
Trespassing is also a social status thing. Lots of privileged people think they’re above the law. Lots think “ awww it’s ok, it’s just a farm, the old farmer won’t care “.

We have had a local state patrol officer trespass to hunt pheasants on our property. I have run him off many times, the last time, his now grown son was begging for hunting rights to our property.. I was not interested in a deal with folks that repeatedly trespassed. They shot at a pheasant 30 yards behind our house perhaps 15 years ago now. I was on the roof repairing a loose shingle and saw them on my property hunting.. Got off the roof and went and confronted them.. they claimed they shot in the air to try and get the dog to return to them... I told them I witnessed the whole thing from my roof, that if it ever happened again, to just let the dog go and come to the house and ask permission to retrieve dog.. I would hold it for them if it came up to me.

The last time I confronted them a couple years ago, I think the son got the message and hunts elsewhere now, but suspect his dad still trespasses whenever he feels like it.. he can park out of sight from our house and I can't see over the hill unless I am on the roof or happen to be over there.. and he knows it so he just continues to do as he pleases..

I will not hesitate to take action with an aggressive dog, had one a few years ago challenge my grand daughter and I (he was about 100 yards away on our property) when we were working behind the shop.. I put the grand daughter in my truck and shouted at the dog to go home. The dog owner was sitting in his truck on the road watching. I let him know to get his dog off my property or I would be forced to take action. He thought about it a few minutes before getting his dog and going home..

Most certainly do not hesitate. Dogs can do horrific damage to human skin. I found that out when I was 10 years old.
Do not think the dog will stop if it is charging you and any closer than 10-20 feet. Protect yourself and young uns FIRST.
Another quick story: I attended Penn State University with a very lovely young lady named Diane Whipple. She was an amazing women’s lacrosse player and I knew her from being on men’s lacrosse.
Look what dogs did to her.

A little off topic but I saw posts on bobcats. There is a “Best of Craigslist” section, in it is a woman who found a bobcat trapped between fences and she freed it and let it in the house thinking it was a pet. The Craigslist add was for someone to claim their lost pet. It’s pretty hilarious. She said it wasn’t very friendly and peed all over the place. Don’t know if the original was real or fake but funny none the less

Because you've voiced a preference for reaching for a gun instead of a phone.

A phone will do nothing to stop a dog attack. Even a 40lb bull terrier will rip through your arm in seconds and youll be wishing you had a gun.
I didnt get the feeling that anyone here was going to shoot a dog harmlessly sniffing around 100 feet or more from their house.
Anyone who shoots a dog on their property doing nothing at all harmful IS going to extremes.

Another law in MS that I think is still on the books protects dogs even if they are on your land. Years ago deer dogs were a big issue. I don稚 hear much about it anymore at least in our corner of the state.

Yea, I've seen one for a possum, too. This was a gag.

As I said earlier, I had a problem with some neighbors' dog running as a pack. The owner of the main culprit eventually solved the problem by building the mother of all dog pens. So far, I have been able to give every dog on my ground a pass, but if one ever shows aggression at my wife or children, I will do what is necessary to protect my family.

Okay, how about a fun variance on this discussion. I was in the blind yesterday trying to call a nice tom in. Suddenly there was a large gray cat about 15 yards away, just standing there staring in my direction. My immediate assumption was it was a stray somebody had dumped. Cats don't normally last long around here. The coyotes, I think, get them. So having a bit of a soft heart I am wondering if I should rescue it. My wife would not be happy. My dog would not be happy. As I contemplating this, I notice it is a bit muddy. Okay, it has been out here a few days at least. Hmmm? It appears well fed. Well, I have quite a rat problem so it has probably been feasting on them. And then it hits me. That face, those ears, it is powerfully built from what I can see. It is facing straight at me. Wish I could see its profile or tail. After a couple of minutes, it turns and walks away. Yes, that is one "here kitty, kitty. Here kitty." that would not have ended well for me. It was a young bobcat and obviously wasn't starving.

That's funny. About 25 years ago when we lived in South Carolina we had a hot tub off the side of the deck in some landscaping. Well I was out there late one night and our big, black male cat Cosmo came walking up. So I'm sitting there talking to him and reaching out to pet him, and &^%( if it wasn't a huge raccoon. I seriously think he was going to get in the hot tub with me; then he just turned around and waddled off.
