All these discussions on property boundaries and trespassing do not take into regional state laws.
I'm not a lawyer, though I do sleep with one at night, but I know the laws in Vermont were that I could generally hunt on other peoples land UNLESS it was POSTED whereas in Mississippi all land is "NO TRESPASSING" by default.
It’s the same way in Maine, although there are some who would like to change that. It doesn’t help that a woman was killed a few years ago by a hunter who thought she was a deer. Second time in 30 years...:(
Getting back to the dogs running onto posted land; generally they are chasing a bear or raccoon which started on another property. That’s another thing which is different here than in other states; the game does not belong to the landowner.

Sorry if I misunderstood. My apologies.

Thought just occurred to me that if the dogs are so valuable and are that tame/well behaved, just call them over, tie/lock them up and call the sheriff or animal control. If the owners show up first, tell them they can't come on the ground and have to wait to talk to LEO's/Animal Control/Game Warden. Keep the dogs watered and in the shade until they are picked up. A few fines would probably get the offending hunters to take better care. Of course, the other thought is once someone starts hunting on land without permission, (depending on state laws as Newbury points out) that might be poaching. The state might take their dogs, their transmitters, their trucks. They better watch their attitude.

Dogs running through during or just before hunting season would bother me. The only year I got zero during deer season is when my neighbor let his pack run. Still, I didn't yell at anyone. It was just a firm but polite keep the critters off my ground. One told me his dogs didn't run game. Just then a big doe bolts across the field in mid-day. A few seconds later, here come his dogs. I looked at him and with a smile said "Don't run game, eh?" As I said, he fenced his place pretty securely a few months later, problem solved.

No problems.. no apologies needed

Yep!! If I could keep a cop in my pocket they might work! When you live out in the middle of nowhere they do not protect, they just clean up the mess after! I'll keep my gun handy.

Yes this is the answer when it comes to defending you and your own in some cases.

And that’s pretty much sums it up. Some of us live in suburbia where cops can be there in 2 minutes, and some of us will wait 30 minutes for a deputy sheriff.
Gun ownership popularity tends to rise with those wait times.

I probably would be the same IF I lived in suburbia HD ;) but alas I do not . . . :drink:

Yep, 100% correct!! And it wasn't the first time they had done it, I talked to the dog owner after the first time and he just blew me off! You (he) reaps what he sows!!

If you shot the mans dog you ought to have been man enough to told him you did it instead of lying to him, but most likely you knew if you did you would probably get the chance to try out that dental insurance for some re-constructive work, and while I agree a dog hunter should make every effort to keep his dogs off of property he doesn't have permission to hunt, sometimes things happen out of our control, seems heavy handed, but you never know someday something might happen out of your control and you may inconvenience someone a little and you might get to reap what you have sowed.

We've only had one issue with dogs chasing livestock. After several warning shots, the lead dog was still nipping at a cow's legs. SSS. We have dog field trials in our area all the time. Dogs run through but don't bother livestock. Just recently, a guy knocked on the door and said he was tracking one of his dogs and it was somewhere in the back of the farm. He asked for permission to go get it. I told him he could, but no guns or trucks. He would have to walk. He walked about a mile to the back of the farm to retrieve it and thanked me on the way out. Don't mind people like him coming on property.

It's amazing how many city slickers, urbanites and gun banners can't fathom this simple fact. All they see is "Kill! Kill! Kill!". My bet is that it's projection. If they can't trust themselves no wonder they can't trust anyone else.

Very respectful as it should be.

You sound like a decent fellow with common sense, most people appreciate that and a lot of times you make a friend for life, I have been in several tight spots in my travels and sometimes nothing looks better than a friendly face.
