That would have never happened here!!

It seems like there would have been several violations committed by the sheriff. Animal cruelty and abuse as well as firearms violations by the dog owner. I’ve never heard of a sheriff authorizing and actually commanding a dog owner to shoot his own dogs on his own property.

NO question about it, I killed a bull moose with my S&S 12ga., loaded with high brass #6's, at 30 yards...

Off hand, I would have called that a lucky shot; although very believable. I once killed a pheasant at an estimated 40 yards with a 12 ga. modified barrel and one #5 magnum copper clad pellet entering at the tail and exiting through the neck, so I think we tend to underestimate what a shotgun can do. I recall reading an article where a man living in Alaska accidentally killed a 2000# moose at 100 yards with a .22 LR. So the story goes, he was expecting guests and was trying to scare the moose out of the area, and the bullet hit the moose in the head, dropping it in its tracks. True or not, it made a good story.

Different states (or even different counties) different laws....

As of a few years ago, dog owners here in Alabama can be held liable for damages if their dog injures someone who was within their legal rights to be where they were when attacked -- as well as being charged with a felony in the event the dog was/is deemed "dangerous" (essentially a history of physically aggressive/anti-social behaviors defined as part of the law) that can result in prison time for the dog owner of up to 20yrs (depending on type of felony and sentencing). In fact under that law if a dog has been adjudicated as being "dangerous" failure to contain or leash the dog can result in jail time for each incident.

That law was passed several months after there were a couple of separate incidents (in a relatively short time frame) in the state where people were killed on their own property by dogs (owned by other people) that were running loose and attacked the individuals.

So if given the option of putting down their own dogs right then and there or dealing with a lot of legal proceedings and potentially spending time in prison -- and the dog(s) potentially being euthanized anyway - which are people likely to chose? (especially if they weren't responsible dog owners before then).

Not a fan of unnecessarily killing animals, but giving them a pass for doing things that a human could legally be shot for doing doesn't make much sense either....

Just my :2cents:

A moose at 30 yards with birdshot. Tough one for me to swallow unless a lucky shot. I experimented on a 55 gallon drum with 00 buck. At closer ranges the shot went through both sides of the barrel. At some point it just goes through one side and the shot ends up in the bottom. At longer ranges, maybe in the 40 yard range, it just dents the steel and doesn’t penetrate. I did shoot a 2x4 at fairly close range once, maybe 5 yards and it just bored a hole right through it.

Cool!!! Where did you get a gun that would shoot a 2x4 at a barrel with enough power to bore a hole right through it??? I want one!

Having used a shotgun as a weapon, I wouldn't attempt to protect myself with #6 at 30 yards.

I doubt it would be lethal at least most of the time but that’s going to take the fight out of most people. And long before they could run 30 yards to beat you to death with the shotgun you could shoot more times.

Thats an incredible story!
So a sheriff went to a do owners property and made the property owner euthanize 14 dogs, while he stood there?
That wouldn’t happen here either, because I would tell that deputy to go perform a physically impossible task on himself. While we don’t know what HS showed him, there are seemingly several things wrong with that scenario... and I would not have that many dogs.
