Everything can be interpreted in multiple ways. What do TBN'ers from Va. think about the new gun laws?

>>>On April 10, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed five pieces of anti-gun legislation into law. Those measures criminalize the private sale of firearms, ration handgun sales to one a month, create a "red flag" gun confiscation scheme, punish property crime victims who fail to hastily report a firearm as stolen, and restrict how Virginia parents may store and introduce their children to firearms. Northam sent two pieces of anti-gun legislation back, including legislation that erodes the Right-to-Carry and the state firearms preemption statute, to the general assembly with governor's amendments. The General Assembly enacted both items of legislation on April 22.<<<<

I would never want these laws in Texas.

One of the few positive things of the COVID virus and limited assemblies of people is no masses of people means no mass shootings etc...

So "out of sight is out of mind" at least temporally...but the writing is still on the wall and new federal laws are as close as the next nutjob trying to make headlines...

Tell that to the people in Nova Scotia.

Like shooting rats in a barrel. That never would have happened south of the border.

The guy was dressed as a cop, driving a cop car. You think a lot of people are gonna shoot a cop?

Edited to add: I'm from rural NS - people out here are armed to the teeth. I don't think any amount of firearm ownership would prepare someone for a uniformed cop showing up at their door in the middle of the night to murder them.

If the cop is murdering people, setting fire to their homes, yeah.

First, it doesn't criminalize the private sale of firearms. You have to go through a licensed firearms dealer to have a background check on the person you're selling the firearm to. What's so bad about checking to see if Johnny is a meth head wife beater with 7 felonies. More importantly, why are you opposed to that?

Second, rationing handgun sales, I don't agree with the limit on one a month. As long as you pass the background check, you should probably be able to purchase as many as you want.

Third, red flag laws:
wiki said:
In the United States, a red flag law is a gun control law that permits police or family members to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves. A judge makes the determination to issue the order based on statements and actions made by the gun owner in question.[1] Refusal to comply with the order is punishable as a criminal offense.[2][3] After a set time, the guns are returned to the person from whom they were seized unless another court hearing extends the period of confiscation.[4][5][6]

Johnny is threatening to shoot the neighbor for mowing his lawn on Sunday!

How would you handle that situation?

Fourth, promptly reporting stolen firearms. You come home and find your house broken into, several guns and ammo missing.... I think I'll eat dinner and mow the lawn and maybe call the police tomorrow?

Why do you agree with that?

Fifth, how you store firearms and introduce children to firearms. To me, that's two separate issues.

1. storing, what's good enough?
- trigger lock?
- gun box?
- locked in a room?
- locked in your house?
- sitting on the coffee table in an unlocked house

How far do you have to go to make sure no one else gets ahold of your gun without your permission? Granted, no one should enter a house without permission, and that's criminal and should be prosecuted. However, what about people that are in your house with your permission. Should you have enough common sense to keep guns in a safe place, or trust other people to have common gun sense? If you choose the latter, is that criminal, or just niave?

2. introducing children to firearms.
- age?
- maturity level?
- parental judgement on both age and maturity?

Those things can't be measured by a number, and some parents aren't capable of making good judgements. When my kids were small, I didn't want them going to houses where guns were kept unlocked and in the open. Plain and simple. Not that I didn't trust my kids, but kids mess up sometimes, wether it's my kid or someone else's kid, kids mess up. So do adults. I introduced my kids to firearms when I thought they were ready. I've met some very mature kids that I think would be fine with the responsibility. And I've met some very immature kids that have become immature adults and I wouldn't trust with a toilet plunger, let alone a firearm.

Anyhow, those are my thoughts.

Yep. Several times a year around here we get the guy that dresses up as a cop and tries to pull people over, or gain entry to their homes, etc... Fortunately, most people figure it out fast, but really, if you're out in public and see a cop shooting your first instinct is that he must be shooting for a reason and not suspect him as some nutjob on a killing spree.

I followed that story for a few days and gave up with all the misinformation. I just have little doubt that the situation would have been different south of the border. I am annoyed to no end, that even with firearms, I as a Canadian can not have them at the ready, nor the ammunition, to protect myself, and would risk "CRIMINAL" prosecution if I acted differently.

These are common sense gun laws, NOT anti gun laws. The only one I don't agree with is the one gun per month rule. I don't understand that one. Of course 2bit tried to skew the real law with lies, and I don't agree with that either.

#3. Red flag law:
some folks literally cant survive without a gun. A woman being preyed on by a stalker, a guy who works in the bad part of town emptying vending machines, someone who plays in a band at bars late at night in the city. Theres many more people in these situations than you think. Lets say one of them gets turned in by ex husband or ex wife as being unstable and its only because the person holds a grudge or wants revenge. Its there word against yours. Who does the judge or magistrate believe? If they take the persons gun away, what if they are in a life/death situation? Whos responsible for their death if it happens?
How about a neighbor you get into a property or water run off dispute with? What if they turn you in as some kind of loose cannon yet all you did was raise your voice in anger? Ex wife you argue with and she wants to get you back?
Theres no limit to how the red flag law can be used in all the wrong ways.
And another thing: what/who determines the reinstatement of gun rights to the person who was red flagged? How long will it take? What does the person have to do to get their gun back?
Guys let me tell you, these are VERY slippery slopes and if the decision is put into the hands of an unfair arbiter, it could prove disastrous.
Will you have to pay a $200/ hour lawyer to help you get guns back? Will you lose time at work?
Once you lose your rights, they can be surprisingly tricky to get back!

#4 must report stolen firearms immediately law:
So theres a lot to unpack there and with some of the others.
Lets say Im real busy during haying season or we get 20 of snow and I am plowing for 2 straight days. And believe me, that happens. Lets say in the beginning of one of those busy periods, my house is broken into and I am not home 48 hours, or even better example, Im on a 5 day vacation. My neighbor is a witness to seeing a strange car in my driveway 2 days ago, but doesnt report it. He thinks its just a visitor. The cops interview him since he was a witness and saw me come in out my house a dozen times, but I was busy and didnt know my gun was stolen.
Will I be a criminal since it took me 2 days to report it? Is being busy a good enough excuse? Or will I be cuffed for not reporting?

#1 is just ridiculous. I should be able to buy as many guns as I want. Thats absurd.

#5:
Your home is broken into and the cops come. They do a thorough search of your home and find you own 25 guns. One gun is not quite stored to their liking. The cop that finds the gun is a died in the wool Hillary Clinton supporter and sees you have a Trump bumper sticker and are wearing a MAGA hat. She/he is having a bad day and decides to refer you to the district attorney for prosecution for not storing all 25/25 guns properly.....says she was simply upholding the law. You simply forgot to put the gun in its proper place in your own home.
Don’t laugh, this kind of prairie “ justice “ happens all over.

We already have very stringent gun laws on the books, but they have been unenforced. We don’t need a bunch of new restrictions. Proper background checks should be done.
