I think the large majority of those unemployed are the people that would not generally be in the market for a tractor. Chances are the dealer selling at a competitive price will in business to service your tractor. If there are "fire sale" dealers, they may not have the necessary plan in place to stay in business.

The government is going to prop up the country at any cost because this is an election year. My feeling is that after the election, all **** is going to break loose.

This whole thing makes no sense to me. All we hear about is doom and gloom yet every single person I know is working and busy as ever. Items cost the same or more than before. With supposedly 1/4 the country unemployed how is this possible?

It's not 25% unemployment. As of yesterday, it's 14.7% unemployment. ;)

And when you look at that segment of workers its not your types with money anyways. Sure you got some medical out right now and yeah some small business' are hit hard. Like I said Im not down playing anything a lot of people are losing their buns right now. Im a very small data point but all the people I know have not had covid yet and only one person doesnt have a job and they are making more sitting at home right now. The real effects if anything will truely be felt 4th qtr or 1st qtr next year. Companies like Kubota figure why take a loss right now if they dont have to. Farmers will still buy the stuff and people buying residential use tractors have the money anyways.

Where you are going to see the biggest deals moving forward is on services to bring customers back, think travel, airlines, tourist places, eateries etc. Now the one capitol purchase/ expensive item where we might see deals is the auto industry

But those are the numbers from the prior month correct? I heard on the radio that is what the report said but the reports are a month behind and currently they estimate 25%.

As others have pointed out I guess you are right many of those out of work are not the typical tractor buyers.

Maybe I should have rephrased me question - if you wanted to buy a tractor this year, but had no immediate need to make the purchase now, should one pull the trigger now or are better deals likely coming ?

Just an opinion, but I'm betting this is the time to buy before supplies get tighter and added costs drive prices upwards. There is a lot of money out there, and people are anxious to spend it. Even those few that I know who are collecting unemployment are thrilled with the added cash getting thrown at them. Many of those working are working long hours and banking a lot of OT cash. Add the normal restaurant routine that many were used to, now saving money by eating at home, and wallets are full.

As the saying goes, pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. They aren't going to give the tractors away at zero profit until they have to pay inventory tax on them. So how much lower can they go? Who knows? I don't have a need or want, so I'm outa that demographic.

With retirement getting nearer we will be adding a vehicle to replace the one that has been provided by the company. We're settled on a Tahoe. No definite date in mind, but I've been following prices for the last year. Recently I have seen some dealerships advertising new Tahoes at MSRP. Other dealers have ads with an MSRP of over $60K and a sale price of $47K without even talking to them. According to news reports, GM has been pretty much in shutdown recently and will start building 2021's at the Arlington plant on May 18th. What effect that has remains to be seen.

My boss told me his used car dealer buddy has been swamped with customers recently. His feeling is that most of them are using their relief check as a down payment.

It is really difficult for me to figure out what's going on. On one hand there are mile-long lines to get free food. Then I see reports of businesses booming and people buying big ticket items as though everything is just peachy. If we do reach a point where prices will be in a slump, when will it be? Wifey went to the butcher shop yesterday and said there's plenty of beef, but the prices are about 25% higher than last week.

Thats kind of my thing, nobody I know is hurting for money right now, combined with not spending money on gas, trips, etc, like somebody said there is a lot of money out there right now and its going to explode mid to late summer maybe early fall. There will be a fall out at some point with price corrections etc and thats when it will hurt, but then again with stimulus money out there and people being better off then the media portrays maybe this is just a fart in the wind.

If it were me I wouldnt wait or not wait on items to buy as I dont think there is any good prediction on anything. If demand peeks watch out

I think as time wears on we will begin to see deals from people that have become unemployed.

I saw a 25 HP 4WD NH tractor with loader the other day advertised for 7 grand. It wasn't the typical scam type ad so I think it was a person down on their luck. Photos were believable faded paint but ad said everything worked as it should and they just needed the cash. If I hadn't just tapped into my savings to build a new barn I may have snatched it up for my daughter.

Very interesting viewpoints that I can't really argue with and explain what I have been seeing. At first glance one would think with all the uncertainty people would be apprehensive about making a large purchase coupled with people in binds unloading things yielding a buyers market.
