Coyote too close for comfort

My parents were bitten by a rabid fox years ago. I've always thought if a wild animal is acting abnormally I suspect rabies. I'd much rather assume an animal has rabies, err on side of caution not touching it. Even just saliva I understand you could get rabies.

Whole family had to go through rabies shots 3 years ago. Saliva has to get in your blood, mouth, eyes for you to get it. If unsure, best to get the shots, as it's statistically 100% fatal.

I'm glad you took a shot at what you perceive to be someone that can't handle their liquor. The fact of the matter is someone like myself, at 6' - 215# would be legally drunk, over 0.08, after just two 9% beers in 30-60 minutes.

I know someone who bought a pet "domesticated" skunk; turns out it had rabies and the whole family had to take the shots. What's so ironic, is that father had to take rabies shots back during WWII; he was a farm boy, but fur trapping on the side, and was bitten while skinning a "dead" skunk.

I stepped outside early one morning about a month ago, walked around the barn, and a large coyote was standing there about 50 feet from me. He looked at me, I looked at him, we had a 10 second stand-off and he decided he was heading out into the woods. He was a pretty animal, large and looked sleek and healthy, but a bit too close for my comfort. I have no livestock, and my cats live indoors, so I wouldn't shoot him just for coming around. But a neighbor has a small dog that was attacked by a coyote and a neighbor on the other side has chickens. Both of those fellows are pretty good shots, and wouldn't hesitate.

I lived here for decades and there were always Coyotes around. Some would just wonder by within 200 feet, going about their rounds, not phased by me or our activity. Had Cats all those decades, free to come and go, and knew of some that lived in the area without a home. Never lost a cat or had one of those homeless cats just disappear.

My crazy neighbor (super nice guy but nuts in a "nice" way) years ago his dog got rabies. He shoots it, then CARRIES it over to a spot in his pasture. Digs hole and buries it.
I think I read in history years ago one guy survived rabies. It's fatal as you say. My neighbor was just dam lucky. Blood, saliva.

I'm 6ft, 210! Same exact thing (drinking). My brother is 5'7"...120#...he can drink an incredible amount, you'd never know...but he started as a teen and at 71 never slowed down. Glass of wine instead of coffee when he gets up at 2pm. A teaglass.

There's been many times in my past where I've put down 24 beers in an evening plus multiple shots, and still functioned. I could handle my liquor. Doesn't mean I wasn't drunk. I was after 3-4 beers.

My best dog/pet/friend ever was a Coydog. We rescued her in the wild when she was about 6mo old. Took her to a vet to learn she was half coyote and have German Shepard. Vet said don't keep her... glad we did. Super smart, great around kids, lived a great life as part of the family... and I can go on and on.

That said, if a coyote is becoming a pest, and a threat to my livelyhood, I wouldn't hesitate taking it out. Hopefully live and let live. Good luck.
