I am a Union Carpenter. So, being on the inside there is good and bad like everything else in life. Good guys / bad guys. Hard workers / lazy pieces of sh*t. The wages are great compared to non union, and the benefits are better as well. The one big difference I see is the level of professionalism of the Union men vs the non union. Union guys know their craft and are career men; others, not so much. Not that any of this has anything to do with good deals because of the pandemic...
I believe that you have framed your response better than anyone else here on this subject.
Many unions are very different.
Certainly not all unions are good ones.
Unions came about because employers abused their employees.
If an employer is always fair to the employees, there may not be a need for a union.
