I am a Union Carpenter. So, being on the inside there is good and bad like everything else in life. Good guys / bad guys. Hard workers / lazy pieces of sh*t. The wages are great compared to non union, and the benefits are better as well. The one big difference I see is the level of professionalism of the Union men vs the non union. Union guys know their craft and are career men; others, not so much. Not that any of this has anything to do with good deals because of the pandemic...

I believe that you have framed your response better than anyone else here on this subject.

Many unions are very different.
Certainly not all unions are good ones.
Unions came about because employers abused their employees.
If an employer is always fair to the employees, there may not be a need for a union.

One of my best friends is in the carpenters union. Hes also 8 years younger than me. I was taught by my father and self taught. I can almost double his output. He痴 a good framer, but he just shakes his head at my work output compared to his. I don稚 take any breaks or eat lunch. Ill eat 2 or 3 protein bars I keep in my nail pouch while I work. Of course a protein bar in a nail pouch prolly violates a union rule of some kind.
By the end of an 8 hour day, I will have worked 7&1/2 hours. He will have worked about 6 hours. :ashamed:
Im not anti-union. My wifes in a union and she has outstanding benefits extended to our family and an amazing pension that would make me ashamed to collect it. Of course that pension is taxpayer funded.

Well, good thing for you you can bash the Union's to satisfy your politics and then turn around and rely on wifey's benefits and pension. Some would call that double dipping.

I have seen the worst of both; I pride myself in my knowledge, not to the group I belong to.

My wifey ? :rolleyes:Ummm ok. Even she thinks unions far outlived their usefulness. So many lazy slugs where she works, but the union protects them. Theres no option for her not to not be in it. If there was merit pay, she make double her salary, so its not like her union is helping us. Theyre paying her the same as someone who shows up late, and either drunk or hung over and makes every excuse known to mankind to leave work.
Only you are implying Im anti-union. You did that. I said I could outwork my union carpenter friend. Thats ONE person. Im sure theres union carpenters that can outwork me, too. All I said was I can outwork a guy whos union permits him to take 2 long breaks and a long lunch break. I take no break, unless nature calls...
“ Bash the union? “ I went out of my way to credit the union for their benefits. I even said in my previous post “ Im NOT anti-union “ so what’s up Steppy? Sounds a little too “ Born to be Wild “ towards me .
Speaking of benefits, my career supplied the bennys before she got into the union and continue to do so even now,
Oh and by the way, my SEP IRA upon retirement aint exactly going to be chopped liver, either. Its not like I saved nothing for our retirement, ya know

You are pickin fly chit outta the pepper.
It is possible that you may even know the answer to your own question.
Sadly: You are obviously a union hater.

Not at all. The two at my last employer were worthless. At my current employer, there are union carpenters, plumbers, pipe fitters and electricians. Haven't had one problem with any of them in 3 years.

Well,.... whatever you choose to think!
For ten years, I was an elected union representative for a local union with 6000 members, that nationwide had 50,000 members.
All were college educated.
We had 3 strikes in my 33 years there (that is 3 too many).
The issues you suggest were NEVER true!

What I stated is exactly what I saw. Like most things in life there was good and bad. I saw workers that should be fired defended by union leadership. These few bad workers made life harder for those who were good workers. I left that employer twenty years ago. As I stated, most of the hourly workforce were good hard working people but just like every place I have encountered there were a few bad apples. I personally saw union leadership defend sleeping on the job.
