Here's what I saw up in the nest. No wonder she was upset - a week ago I'd stuck a mirror up there and saw 6 eggs.

Just a harmless gopher snake..

I'd get a way longer extension on my mirror ! :D

I always thought this pic of my wife was different. We went for a walk in the bush in NZ on our honeymoon a few years back and found these toadstools. Strange things like you see in fairytale books.

Great pics Alien. I am intrigued by toadstools, mushrooms, etc. I always wonder the purpose of their shape and markings? It's like they are designed to draw attention to themselves? What would be the purpose in that?

My wife and I stayed in a Motel in Buena Vista Colorado several years ago. The owner and his wife collected and sold toadstools/mushrooms. They were from Germany and spoke broken English. We sat at a picnic table in the Motel yard for two hours drinking beer and getting educated. They had been collecting all day. Had two very large baskets full. We really enjoyed that time. Wish I had taken a bunch of pics.

Beautiful nature shot! Very similar aren't they Richard? Looking back at old pics I often wish our phone cameras were better then. LOL The one I have now has super macro.

I have a nice Sony digital camera. But my phone (Samsung Galaxy 6 I think) works almost as well.

I wonder if the bright colorings and markings are to scare off predators that might eat them? I can't think a "digested" toadstool spore would survive so it would do no good to be transported to a different location.

Might want to inquire into dollars invested between pine and snymat68.
I know. Just thought it would be a good question for reference.

While gear does play a role in getting certain shots, it's by no means a necessity to spend a lot of money to get good shots.
A lot of practice, patience, skill, and luck are required (as with many things).
I pride myself on the time and work I put in to getting a lot of my shots.
Purchasing expensive camera equipment makes you a good photographer no more than buying an expensive tractor make you a good operator.
Not that you were implying that, but I want to make sure people know that you can get some pretty epic shots with mediocre gear. :)
Also, he did say his shot was a screenshot from a video camera feed. So that's apples to oranges. ;)

For the past couple years I've had a momma Phoebe build her nest on a beam in the breezeway between my house and garage - just over the entry door to the garage. A couple days ago I heard momma bird raising all kinds of racket out there so I stepped out to see what was going on. Here's what I saw up in the nest. No wonder she was upset - a week ago I'd stuck a mirror up there and saw 6 eggs.
Just a harmless gopher snake...but for the life of me I cannot figure out how he got up there. He was still in the nest the next morning; I was hoping to see how he managed to get back down but a few hours later he was gone and I have no idea how he found access. Location of the nest is circled in red.
That's amazing. How the heck is it sticking to that post and conduit???

Google "snake climbs wall" and you'll be amazed at how little surface texture they actually need to climb a vertical wall or tree.

Yesterday out back, I filmed an egret sitting in a tree, and then flying off when I got too close. But, the video quality sux. :(
