How old is that article? It's describing the old version of treated wood from a decade or more ago.

Like ed said the arsnic has been removed from the formula [old wolmanized ] and the new stuff I forgot the name but it is not as toxic as the wolminazed lumber. We have to wait 5=10 years for them to tell use this stuff causes cancer in lab rats to and the want us to rip it out and buy the new thing they are trying to sell. If you realy want zero maintance don't have anything. Everything requires maintance vynle siding gets moldy , people put there BBQ to close to it and it melts . Plastic swells and contracts like a mother, I think the Azek book says it's a 1/2 " over 16" I watched the gable end of a house we did open every morning when we came in and close up as soon as the sun came up. Plastic stains like the dickens leaves will leave black stains coffee or wine you will never get out .:drink:

More than zinc. Here from wiki

In the pressure-treating process, lumber is sealed in a tank, and air is extracted, creating a vacuum. Then a solution containing chromium, copper, and arsenic is added. Because of the vacuum, the chemicals are carried deep into the wood. Chromium is a bactericide, copper a fungicide, and arsenic an insecticide, and all arrest decay of some kind. All three are toxic, but chromium and copper don稚 raise many concerns. If we don稚 inhale it, chromium is not particularly harmful to us, and copper isn稚 very toxic to mammals, although it is to aquatic life and fungi. It痴 arsenic that is worrisome.

Of course.....but didn't someone say that zinc is beneficial?
So should we just ignore arsenic?
Is the hazard of arsenic canceled out by the benefit of zinc?

Is it acceptable to build children playground climbing equipment of PT lumber, containing arsenic?
The the Zinc in PT should be good for children ....so ignore the arsenic?

I take Zinc every day in capsule form.
I do not choose to also absorb arsenic from treated lumber.

The composite decks do have drawbacks. I have an Azek deck and it does get a little hot in the sun, is slippery when icy and a couple of mitered corners have moved a little. That said, I would never go back to wood. After 8 years, it looks great and maintenance is limited to power washing a couple of times a year.

One of the few battles I won with the DW was concrete vs. pavers vs. wood deck. 21 years ago concrete won, and it looks almost the same today as it did years ago.

My error!......I don't know why I did not quickly realize that the hazards of Arsenic should be ignored!

Well, since there is none is today's PT wood used by consumers .....
