I thinking about getting a new Kubota. I have a large dealer near me who is good. However, a friend said he bought one out of state for several thousand dollars less. What are the downsides if any buying from an OOS dealer? Thanks!

If you need service the dealer near you wont jump to make you happy or put you first.....

If dealer screws up an accessory install local dealer won't fix it for free. Any dealer will do warranty work. Out of warranty work, they could charge you more per hour, but unlikely. What I've found is bring the quote from the OOS dealer to the local and tell him match or lose sale.

If you are not a business an in state dealer charges sales tax. Out of state you have to figure and pay sales or use tax, if you wait until you file end of year taxes they may hit you with late fees. Illinois is quickly becoming a high tax state - normal car, truck and trailer plates now $100 more.

Agreed - for the initial warranty aspects, but if you are mechanically inclined, dealers aren't such a big factor and after the 50 hour service historically there are few issues with Kubota machines.

The one concern that I would have is if I was purchasing a tractor with a sophisticated emission control system like many have today. These control systems are not self serviceable, you need their software and I would think if you purchase the tractor from a local dealer they would be more inclined to help you out if you had this type of issue. Granted these systems are getting more reliable and hopefully some of the instances we read about on this forum are clearly the minority. However, when your looking at spending $25,000 or more and your tractor has an emissions issue that you can't work on, you might wish you bought locally for a little extra support. If you have a trailer and the time to haul it back to the "out of state dealer" then this might not be as big of a concern.

Most dealers probably make most of their profits (Keep the business open daily) from the service dept. So knowing or believing this should lead one to think, as I do, that a dealer maybe lost the one time profit of a sale but desires the ongoing maintenance and supplies business of a local customer and to create ill will for a lost one time past opportunity makes no business sense. Warranty work is paid by Kubota to the dealers at Kubotas determined rate and I've heard it is an acceptable rate but maybe not as much as a dealer may like to make and can make when people have no other choice. I've bought almost 30 Kubotas and almost all of them were new and do my own first 50 hrs easy peasy service and have rarely ever needed any warranty work. These are Kubotas we're talking about!:cool2:

I bought my M6040 local. It's the same dealer I've been dealing with for the last 38 years. I do my own routine maintenance. However, for no service charge - the dealer has come out twice to complete factory upgrades to the M6040.

This dealership is honest, fair and blows BS nowhere. It will be a cold day in H*LL when I want to change this situation by dealing with somebody else.

Just bought a BX from your favorite dealer and am awaiting delivery to my non Kentucky location. Previous Kubota experience concurs with your opinion that the likelihood of anything major going wrong is low. Especially with my low impact residential uses.
Even with the delivery charge, which I thought was reasonable I saved myself $2500 or so. Used that saved $2500 to outfit the tractor with a loader.
