Price of meat almost doubled here...do you folks have a meat processor nearby?

Pork ribs today were $1.79 per pound, chicken quarters in 10 pound packages were $0.39 per pound, Yes, $3.90 for 10 pounds...

I saw lots and lots of meat on the shelves and none that I would say was anywhere near double in price!

If you have a front loader or a couple buddies and an old metal bathtub you can build a fire under, you might take care of slaughtering a hog yourself, then haul it to the butcher to get cut and wrapped or cured and smoked.

So we quit with the heating water in a tub to scald the pig so you could scrape the hair off. Just take a (tiger torch / branding torch) propane torch and blister the skin of the pig. The hair comes off easy by scraping and you don't have this awkward tub of hot water to deal with. Try it once. You'll never go back.

I sold a few yearlings last week and I have been creep feeding them so they were good looking yearlings, the 350-400 lb heifers averaged a $1.03 a pound, 400-450 steers averaged $1.28 a lb , while one steer that I suspect was bought by an individual for feeding out to butcher brought $1.55 lb , so it was a poor day at the market for me, I am seriously considering getting out of the cow business, which may be exactly what somebody wants.

man that's bad ! I have been hanging on for now. I don't know for how long though. I have one set to go to butcher next month, so I'll have plenty of beef for a while.
Sad part is, many are trying to hang on, but when they do have to sale, the market will be flooded with beef. Much like the oil market is flooded.

I may have to get out myself and just go down to the pond and catch a few of those catfish.

The slogan may be.... Catfish, it's whats for dinner !

They are sale prices that are seen around here quite regular, can't be too big of a loss, or everyone would have gone out of business long ago...

I've been seeing pretty nice T-bones for $5.99 per pound all the time...

Like I said, you see meat prices like that here pretty regular...

I don't even know how anyone breaks even at those prices.

It's not imported meat, it's just because there's lots of competition here and lots of it around.

You can pay more, just buy the small packages that are marked up because of convenience...

Food prices have always been low here, but some prices ARE a little higher now...

Best I've seen for chicken quarters around here is 49 cents. They are normally 69 cents.

I just fertilized all my cow pastures so I am going to see what happens , I should be able to put some weight on the whole herd as long as we get a little rain along and along, we will see what happens by the fall. I always try to be hopeful but I have been hopeful for quite a few years and my cow operation is no longer paying for itself, my hobby has gotten expensive.
