weather website or app?

I got so sick of other websites and apps that I made my own weather app (Wx) many years ago, and it's since become pretty popular among people who want facts and details with no fuss. There is a common frustration with weather information among many people, and I think it's because the commercial companies got greedy and maybe got too flashy and resource intensive, while simultaneously dumbing things down (how you can go in opposite directions boggles my mind). I just can't stand flashy weather apps -- they try too hard to impress and totally blow it.

Eddie, if you're on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, PM me and I can send you a coupon code to get the app for free. You've contributed so much to TBN and helped me over the years, it's the least I can do.

Not trying to toot my own horn but... back in the day I had only the second mobile WX application available on the earliest mobile phone browsers (WAP protocol)...it used a PERL script ( I hacked from an unnamed northern university computer lab) that downloaded and formatted radar images from the NWS and created an animated GIF montage...AKA "radar loop"

All this was done via a PHP script I wrote (including the PERL script) along with the capabilities of ImageMagick and the wonder of the Apache server...
It was a wonderful time of the Internet but but it did not take long for big money/big tech to usurp the creativity of individual web developers...

Ah, the good old days. My first weather software (before "app" was a cool buzzword) was all written in scripts and pretty good for the time. I don't know how I held it all together; if it was a tractor it would have been made of duct tape and baling wire. But it worked. Years later I went to C and Obj-C and the leap in capability was quite nice, plus easier to develop for.

It truly was an amazing time...and I really mean "amazing" when it came down to seeing what you could do with some typically basic scripts that were mostly just strings of simple commands calling different functions of installed packages etc...I failed to mention that one of the main functions of my animated radar script was CRON for capturing the series of static radar images over a short period of time to create the animation...

I use WU and can see my weatherstation listed there.

To know what the current WX is ..all you have to do is look out the window or open the door...

IMO good weather forecasts are the best form ever of being able to see into the future and without modern technology it's anyone's guess...
Don't need a WX station to tell if it's hot or cold or raining or not...!
