I'm thinking he did that intentionally. I can't tell why from what's in the photo. Maybe just wanted some separation between the stump and the butt to make pulling it out easier? How about filling us in on what the plan was, Skeans1?

It was done intentional, lead with less damage if the top had stayed up the hill farther the tree to right would have been barked when the grapples yanked the second cut out.

Thanks, there are a few vids of the machine on YouTube Homemade firewood processor - Big changes - YouTube. Every year, I modify it and add to it. This year I finished the conveyor system and added to the feed system. That video will be coming soon. When I posted the pict. above of getting this log out,
I got some emails, saying it was a waste of my time because the log wasn't worth burning... lol Well, I can't say that I agree, and besides it was my time to waste!
Anyway, today was another very nice day, and as I needed (5) 2x's to finish building another firewood box, I loaded that log on my BSM and started milling it,
and I just got my five 2x's out of it,
and now I have another firewood box to fill!
and the best part for me is, "I" planted that tree about 30 years ago, so WHO SAYS you only plant tree's for the next generation!

Where MAX strength is needed, I use screws, otherwise, it's nails.
I have them designed now, where I can take them apart if needed, IF I break a board or two.
Only Time I have a problem is, if I get crazy and ram into one, or in the winter if one gets froze down, and I get LAZY and don't break the runners loose before I try to pick it.
I normally don't have a problem with them freezing down, but every once in a while...
