Negative but thanks for the suggestion.

Then I would remove it if you can. I also have a brush hog and a quick hitch. It is just hard to get your hands in there. It's not really a gaurd that is needed. Make sure it won't tilt up. I didn't know mine did.

Will the guard tilt up out of the way? I don't know if they all do or not. I didn't realize mine did and fought it like crazy. I bumped it out of the way one day and folded it up all the way. It was easy after that as there was room to get both hands in there at the correct angles. I don't know if this helps or not but it was my problem.

It took me a year to realize that mine tilted up. Ever since I haven't had a problem. I have both sleeve and pin type shafts and they go on equally as well. I have a cover for when my PTO shaft isn't in use- simply a molded piece of rubber made for the purpose. I also have found that 00 grease on the shaft as well as all moving 3 pth parts make my life a lot simpler.

I forgot to mention that, but yes, many will tilt up out of the way. (mine does) Sometimes takes some lube on the pivot points to get it to move easily.

My only rear PTO attachment is a logging winch. Very close quarters to hook it up. I have my winch on a dolly. I realized I could hook one lower link arm and then pivot the winch to give me more room to hook up. Then just pivot the winch in, hook up the other lower link, install the top link and I am ready to winch some logs. I have been use a dry film lube. I am leery of gunk build up.

Back in the old days, there was no shield over the PTO stub. My Massey never had one and far as I know, they all tilt up. The shield is to protect yourself from yourself...:D

Mine's on with four bolts, no tilt up.

Or I should say 'was'.

I think you guys are talking 2 different items. The tractor PTO stub shield should flip up, but not all tractors have this (some have been removed and others are old enough that shields were not required).
Then there is the ‘cone’ portion around the u-joint portion of the PTO shaft at each ends. As these ‘cones’ are a part of the PTO shaft shield, removal requires some deliberate action and includes an increase in risk of operation as it grants easier access for loose clothing and other objects to get into the spinning PTO shaft. (The PTO shield including the ‘cones’ on each end should be tied off to prevent spinning with the shaft. Please grease the shields and tie them off. Chains are usually provided for thus purpose.)

Don't try to do all the manipulation at the same time. You don't need the latch disengaged to align the splines.

Hands off the latch, and slip the yoke onto the splines. Leave the latch alone until the yoke is on as far as it will go, then use the latch and push it on the rest of the way. Pull to check that it is fully seated.

My wife bought me the PTO quick attach adapter for Christmas- I was obligated to try it- my Tractor has a 2 speed pto and 63 hp.
I was amazed how much easier it was to connect my pto- my friends with tractors were dumbfounded at how much easier it was.
I had to shorten the pto shaft on every attachment- it was worth it. I made 1 slight modification to the quick attach that has made it even easier- it was originally equipped with a secondary locking pin that had a lever you must depress to remove it. I tossed the secondary pin and replaced it with a same diameter hitch pin with flip over locking ring

Totally agree Bruce! I found your idea to be one of my secrets to success. Don't try to do it all at once!

The other secret is sliding the shaft back and forth - albeit slowly - to make sure it is free and ready to slide. I will push it in then pull it out, repeat 3 times, not big distances but it seems to ease the flow of grease. Once I get the shaft sliding, then I am ready to align with the splines.. slide on the splines, push to stop, push in the button, shove it in the rest of the way.

I was a newbie 2 years ago. Now I am a slightly broken in newbie... still learning. :D

To grease the sliding part of the shaft, how do you get past the covers? I guess I need to break out the manual and study that some and take those apart so I can clean and lube the shaft. Now that the hog is 2+ years old and has done a bunch of hogging and mowing, I think I need to take it apart, clean and lube. I did grease the u-joints and read on this forum about greasing the shaft but when I was on the farm last week, could not see an easy way to do it. I'm sure it will be obvious once I understand!
