Incredible. I got guys telling me not to worry about getting my hands dirty after being a logger for 30 years. I got one guy offering psychological advice and "pay attention" as if I'm not laser beamed focused on someone doing something I have trouble with. All I care about is getting a PTO to hook up with the ease like the rest of the experts.

It seems perhaps the key is a lot of lube. Even when my brush hog was new and had some grease on it from the factory, I still had trouble. I'll spray the crap out of it ands see how that works.

Now if anyone uses a "method" (beyond getting it super slippery) of getting a PTO hook up to be easier, let me know please but save the psyche stuff for yourself.

Hard for me to fathom that after logging for 30 years a PTO shaft would be that challenging or that your skin would be that thin.

Arrow, one other thing to look for are slight burrs in the splines. take a very small file to them if you find any. A sensitive finger is the best way to find them. And as said by others LUBE the he77 out of everything AND suspend the drive shaft with a good strong bungee cord from the 3pt frame so you are not "fighting" with lifting that heavy azzed shaft and trying to "hurry". DO NOT HURRY. take your time and carefully put the splines together. When we are under stress from holding up the weight and hurrying , we fail almost as much as we succeed. When I started doing these things went from a PTO cusser to "what was all the fuss about". PTO engagement is now very easy.

The two things that have worked for me because I struggled at first hooking up my PTO shaft. I could never tell if I had it lined up properly, so I took a paint pen and marked where the ridges are on my pto shaft, so I line up the paint lines in the gaps on the shaft and I'm lined up correctly.

The second thing I do is spray it with WD40 PTFE spray. I spray the tractor shaft and the pto shaft before each use and after each use. The reason I went with the PTFE spray is because it is supposed to protect against rust and lubricate it, which so far it seems to be doing that.

This is what I have found works for me, it may all be psychological, but it has worked for me and I'm happy.

I use Fluid Film on the PTO stubs and the driveshaft slip tubes and the locking buttons. Before and after every use. Clean the stubs and the ujoint mating parts every time. Wipe down with a clean rag. Run a finger on the splines, both parts, a small nick or burr can ruin the party. Dirt and clogged grease are the usual culprits though. It can still be physically difficult to lift, pull, push etc but with everything clean you have a good chance at success.

I never had issues hooking up a PTO until I got a bush hog recently. The way the 3-pt framing is setup on the bush hog, there is no room to get close to the PTO area on the tractor. I am thinking about removing the cup/shield from the tractor end of the PTO shaft so I get better visibility.

Same here I use Fluid Film and you can get a small wire brush its the size of a tooth brush to clean the splines on the tractor and pto shaft .......Good luck...

Probably had paint on it from the factory making it harder to slide on or possibly a light rust haze if sitting on the dealers lot outside when it was new. Even if it didnt, new couplings are the hardest to attach when theyre new, they arent broken in yet.
Bunch of people helping you out here. I had no idea you were a logger for 30 years or a 15 yr old teenager helping out around the farm. The fact that you were having difficulty with such a basic mechanical maneuver left me thinking you were very inexperienced :confused3:
Sorry I hurt your feelers....:dove:
Anyway, hope that PTO shaft slides on easier for ya after all the new tips on lubrication you got.

I am very inexperienced so no apology needed. I am a dolt when it comes to PTO hook up. Apparently, I'm not alone if they make gizmos that make this a cinch. I didn't get "hurt feelings". I get frustrated when i'm looking for answers and people have to go off on a tangent of some sort for whatever is floating their own boat.

There are folks here with disabilities or are not feeling well and not up to strength or inept, such as myself, at certain things.. Denigration of any tool that makes life easier for them is narrow minded at best..Everyone, is not everyone else.

James, BRM, Peter and downsizing. Thanks for your help with the suggestions. At least I've got some "bullets" now to attack with.
