Ok, well I finally gave up on that stupid mmm shoot deflector, I took mine off too. I'm no square, I disable safety stuff on my tractors, but even I'm a bit worried about mowing without that deflector, honestly. But...it's just too in the way, even folded up, screw that thing.
Well, you're certainly not alone there! Mine came off after only a few months. Deck does a great job of dispersing clippings now, also useful for blowing leaves & debris off the driveway.... But yes, I do watch out for situations where it might pick up something and shoot it out. Just be mindful of that possibility and you should be OK.

Yeh, that's my worry. Another is just having that chute open like that with the blades spinning, kinda scary. But I just can't anymore with that deflector, it's such a bother! Maybe sometime I'll modify that thing somehow or fab something up...an idea on the backburner.

I'm with you. I broke a 2 month old window on my new house build on the old mower that came without a deflector. My new mmm has the deflector. I am adding the eye bolt and rope trick to be able to lift the deflector to get close to things or pass through narrow spaces.

Now that's it's dry, I dug a long trench and buried perfed pipe to deal with the spring runoff.
I'm also trying to pull a stump about 20" around but it's not budging. Time to dull a chainsaw blade and cut some roots.

Started using a battery powered sawzall for the roots if my little tractor won’t take care of them. Rather throw away that bade than destroy my chainsaw blades.
