Ford 6600
Hi all
I hoping some kind expert out there might be able to help me with a problem I am having with my power steering. The details are as follows;
Ford 6600 tractor
Over the last year or so the steering has gradually become more difficult, needing more effort.
It is easier to turn to the left than the right and it turns further to left than the right.
From full left lock to full right lock the steering wheel makes 2.5 to 3 rotations
It appears to be no easier to turn the wheels when the front is off the ground. It is impossible to turn the wheels manually when off the ground.
The reservoir continuously needs topping up (by not by much) but I can not see any leaks. I have topped up with universal tractor oil.
When I used it yesterday for topping, the steering got tighter and tighter so that I had to make multiple small turns. After about 2 hours work, I could hardly turn it at all. The pump/reservoir was very hot to touch and the oil looked like it was nearly boiling.
Today, the steering is better than at the close of work last night, but with the same long standing problems.
Is this a problem with the pump or something else?? I have not changed the filter (ever) but it must be more serious than that?
I did not want to spend on a new pump if that is not the solution.
I will be very grateful if anyone can advise.
Many thanks

My ford 4000 has a separate belt driven power steering pump and fill it with automotive steering fluid.

Why would you not start with a filter change?
Good point RickB, I just feel it is more serious than that but I will certainly try it.

You really ought to change your filters. Oil does get contaminated and worn out. A clogged filter does reduce the flow of what ever it is filters whether air, gas, water or oil. Will admit I don't enjoy changing filters either, especially oil filters and the hyd oil ones the most. But I change them. Not trying to beat you up. Trying to encourage you to.

Understood ... I have ordered a new filter and I will report back.

So ... I finally managed to change the filter and as the old one was in a state (see attached), I hoped it might make a change, but sadly the steering is just as bad as before
Does that indicate that it is the pump that is failing? Is it possible for a power steering pump to gradually fail? This problem has slowly been getting worse over many months/years.
What else is there in the power steering system that might be causing the problem? What happens to the oil after it leaves the pump? Could there be a problem there?
I would really appreciate any ideas because I am stumped. 10C6D344-33C5-4AE0-B42B-BA45A2BB3304.jpeg

A tired pump is always a possibility, yes, but it's also possible your problem could be in the spindles. Lack of attention in that area can cause things to gradually get tighter and tighter over time. Bushings and thrust bearings last longer when lubricated.
