I have a 2 YO female black lab that loves to run thru thick brush, trees and cut off stumps catching her thrown toys. Yesterday she got a 2 cut high up on her chest that needed stitches. I am looking at getting a hunting vest fir her that wont overheat her in summer.
Anyone here have any good suggestions? Something that will hold up.

I’ve never seen a vest that would work during the hot summer months. Really easy to overheat a lab even without any vest.

grsthegreat - maybe some kind of "advanced" collar system with a chest protector. My dogs have always run free of collars, blankets, vests, etc. Neighbor lost an Australian Sheep dog to coyotes. Collar got tangled in old barbed wire and neighbor could not find the dog soon enough. Probably a once in a million situation. However - around here, coyotes are thick as ticks. We get serenaded every evening/morning by several groups.

Perhaps stray barbed wire.......

I would have to think that it would be a freak accident for a dog to get cut bad enough to need stitches just by running thru the brush, we run packs of hounds down here in the south in stuff you can't walk thru and I have never had one cut so bad to need stitches from brush, hogs yes, but not brush. Has this ever happened to this dog before?

Am I reading this wrong or is the owner part of the problem? Sounds like paying a vet to stitch your dog hasnt been enough of a deterrent to modify your behavior...stop throwing toys into thick brush, trees and cut off stumps.

How is throwing a toy bad behavior. I live in 20 acres of brush and trees. Im simply asking for some ideas, not criticism. For some reason anytime someone ask for an opinion on this site, people jump in and criticize. Im getting tired of it myself. It ok for a hunting dog to run thru brush and retrieve a bird, but not to play. Get real.

I disagree completely. Having owned two labs - it's the nature of the beast. Labs tend to charge into things - like unkempt areas. Mine would occasionally get cuts on their forelegs. Probably from old barbed wire. Anti-biotic cream - butterfly bandage - elastic wrap covering. If you want a dog that will just tiptoe thru the tulips - don't get a Lab. My current dog - Brownie, a Chocolate Cocker Spaniel - likes to tiptoe out into the weeds.

It was difficult for me to keep either Lab out of my little lake. One would even routinely jump off the cliff - out into the lake. Where he would jump was a 25 foot drop to the water. You could hear a great "OOFF" as he would hit the water. The other - skinny down the cliffs and then jump. A 3' to 5' drop only. Then into some dry dirt and they wanted to come into the house. Fortunately - neither objected to being hosed off.

Life out here can be a thrill a minuet for a dog. Cows, coyote, turkeys, birds of all kinds, skunks, porcupines, raccoons, pocket gophers, deer, elk - the list is never ending. And if you get bored - just dig a hole, a REALLY BIG hole.

I never have my dog on a leash around the property - I let them run, but always under a watchful eye. Just too many distractions to do otherwise.

Never happened before. Just trying to be proactive. I had 3 goldens that never got a scratch, but maybe the heavy fur helped protect them.
