Not that it might not matter too much... why don't you strap the long diagonal before putting in all of the bridging? Might be a little easier. Probably should have been done prior to the joists but hindsight is 20/20. Regardless... good catch. Looking great!

It was done prior to the joists, braced it, made it square, but that was 3 weeks ago and it seems to have shifted.

I agree with Mark. All those nails and screws you want to keep it square work against you if put in too early.

Will be interesting to see a 3rd floor. If not approved, maybe go with a Gambrel roof, you can get nearly same usable sf.

It's tricky. I had to go initially due to a setback variance. Normally 25' from the property line unless, through no fault of my own, the property is irregularly shaped prohibiting me from building a structure. Since it is, the 25' was waived and 13' granted, on the condition that I don't build more than 26' tall, blocking the 3rd story, because i foolishly brought up a possible in-law quarters down the road. They got so hung up on that they forgot about everything else. Granted the variance with the 26' height restriction. By granting the variance, they're admitting that the property is irregularly shaped, it's not my fault, and a variance should be granted. Tacking on additional unreasonable restrictions shouldn't be permitted based on the opinion of one of the members thinking it would look out of place. They're supposed to enforce the law established in the ordinance codebook, not dish out opinions, and the code book says 35' in height be it a garage, house, shed, any residential structure.

Your progress has been great to follow, and it's interesting to see the metal joists. Will you glue and screw the plywood floor to the joists?

I am curious about that as well? I'd be concerned about squeaky floors if not glued?

You talk like squeaky floors are a bad thing. I live in an old house. I think the squeaky floors are just part of it's character. Probably because it's easier to enjoy the floors squeaking rather than fixing it.

There's probably a glue that will bond to both wood and metal.

I've been thinking about that, but i haven't found a glue that will bond to metal and wood yet. My friend says it'll only break down and dry out after a couple years and it'll skweak anyway. But if I put gypsum board down over the plywood and then actual flooring there shouldn't be any noise.

52 screws per sheet of plywood though, how much can it really move to squeak?

Will plywood squeak on metal joists? I've never encountered metal joists before and wonder if it's even an issue.

The only thing that I can think of that would stop squeaking, if it happens, would be the tape used on metal roofs. I'm drawing a blank on what it's called.

PL Premium construction adhesive, or something similar should work. It's rated for almost any material including metal. You could get a tube and try it on a scrap piece of joist to decide if you want to use it. Or maybe contact the joist manufacturer to see if they recommend adhesive or not.
