Commercial Motor Vehicle requirements?

After reading many of these commercial truck license and driver license threads, it seems the state people in the office are reluctant to tell you what to do to be correct, but they have lots of people out there on the road eagerly waiting for you to do something wrong.

I'm glad my only venture into commercial driving was with a bus. I never had to decide to tie down the cargo with straps, chains, or rope.

I think most states require DOT on farm trucks also. I have read a good bit about the horse trailers being pull across state lines with 1ton trucks. People put the truck and trailer under the farm for taxes. Haul a horse to a show across state lines. They get stopped and asked for DOT and CDL. Since the horse show gives prices, they are hauling across state lines with a commercial vehicle for profit. Ticket for some and have been told that some were made to pull it over until they could get someone with CDL.

This was a big issue a few years ago for farmers having to register with the USDOT because even though they sold their grain to the local elevator, the grain was transported across state lines therefore they were included in provisions under the interstate commerce act.

In the wondrous state of new york watch out for your trucks listed CGWR if it's over 26,000 CDL required when used with a trailer, doesn't mater what the trailer is registered for if the door sticker is over 26,000 CDL required

I have applied for and received USDOT numbers just two days ago. The above is an absolutely true statement.

Fortunately I do not have a registration fee and only need to provide driver qualification files for myself and my father, register in the Unified Carrier Registration, perform a safety audit with the local DOT office and label my truck. I hope this does not turn into an avalanche of other regulations, but fully expect it.

My buddy has trucks and let his cousin use a 1 ton to get mulch for his house, got stopped by the state cops and got a ticket for no medical card , So that ticket goes on your DOT number His insurance called and asked if he was hiring drivers with no medical cards.........

Im in Mass and I have a F350 4x4 Platinum diesel crew SRW that is my go out to dinner..or somewhere nice vehicle. It has a vanity plate on it now but is registered at something like 12,500 gvw..no way in **** I'm going to stick dot stickers on it...no way.
Also have a F450 DRW 4x4 dump and I think the gvw is something like 17K.....no dot numbers on that one either. That truck has a commercial plate on it, but is not used for "making money" ..its my plow truck, my go to Home Depot truck, my crappy roads today truck etc

Not correct, New York State goes off of the GVWR for the truck and trailer, adding those together for the GVWR. May tow a 10k or heavier trailer, but truck and trailer GVWRs together need to be under 26k.

This State doesn't make sense sometimes. If the GCWR of truck and trailer is under 26K one can tow a 14K dump trailer behind a 3/4 or 1T truck but a 26K dump truck can't tow the same 14K dump trailer unless you have a Class A license or Class B if trailer is under 10K.

From the DMV's web site;

"What is a New York CDL?

You need a CDL to drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), which is defined as:

Class A: A gross combination weight rating is 26,001 lbs. or more or a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs."

Reading this it is worse then I thought, just a trailer of 10,000# or more puts you in the CDL required, as well as a GCWR of over 26,000# does even without a trailer attached.

Lou, Just a trailer of 10K or more does not require a CDL. With a plain Class D license the trailer can be over 10K if the GCWR is under 26K. I have my CDL and 2- 14K trailers but my pickup can tow either of them with a plain Class D license if GCWR is under 26K.

I got my CDL 30 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. It does open me up to bigger fines if I do make a mistake and get caught, but it has made life behind the wheel much more relaxing. The cops in my area treat me like a professional during routine stops and seem to be less antagonist on little stuff. The cops are really tough on little guys with one tons and landscaping trailers in those gray areas of having/not having a CDL.
