Commercial Motor Vehicle requirements?

Lou, Just a trailer of 10K or more does not require a CDL. With a plain Class D license the trailer can be over 10K if the GCWR is under 26K. I have my CDL and 2- 14K trailers but my pickup can tow either of them with a plain Class D license if GCWR is under 26K.

That was what I had always thought and I was disagreeing with my brother when he got his new truck he had to be carefull of his trucks CGWR.

From what I was told ...here in The people's republic of Mass... Any trailer with a GVW over 9999 requires a CDL. ... if you put a 14k trailer that is empty ..behind a 6k pound F150.... you need a CDL. The 26k combined comes into play if say you are driving a 17k GVW F550 and have a 9999 trailer...CDL is required. .. on the other hand a 12k F350 GVW with a 9999 trailer....no CDL needed.

tomtint,
As per DMV mv500c that Lou posted a class D license (regular license) states the following: "Can tow a vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs only if the combined weight rating of the two vehicles is 26,000 lbs. or less."
With a regular drivers license any vehicle with a GVWR up to 12,000 lb can tow any trailer up to 14,000 lb GVWR since the combined weight is 26,000 or less. Different States may and do vary.

I have 3 GMC 3500s. Two of them are plated with personal plates and non-commercial insurance. No DOT numbers and I have never had a problem. The third 3500 has personal plates, GCVW of 25,900 pounds. 11,400 for the truck and 14,500 for the trailer. I run it as a hot shot truck with non-CDL license. I have been inspected several times as a Level 1 inspection without a problem. I do carry commercial insurance because I haul for hire and I need the cargo insurance. I was told during one of the inspections that I did not need the signs nor the DOT number on the side of my truck and was instructed to by-pass the weigh stations. I still run the signs and DOT numbers because my customers like the info on the truck and I have people take pictures of the signs instead of business cards. I have been running this setup for 9 years and by-passed the scales for 3 years without any problems. This is in Florida.

And I do not recommend hot shoting for a living.
