Rng, we usually wait until the late evening/ sunset to turn on the fan. Sometimes later, like just before bed, if the temps are still warm. Our nighttime temps will seldom be above 60, usually around the 55 mark. Once the outside temp matches close to the inside A/C temp, we switch to the house fan.
In the morning, we turn the fan off and close the windows. The A/C doesn't click on until about noon.
For opening the windows, last night we opened two windows in the front of the house about 2". The 2 bedroom windows (Opposite end of the house) were opened about 4". You can control where and how much ventilation by opening the windows/doors.
Thanks for the links, Ted.
From your photos, it looks like you're making your own baffle in the ceiling, then using one of their gable fans instead of their much more expensive whole house fans, right?
I like your idea a lot more, as it avoids opening up the attic to the outside, which would provide an additional path for ember entry.
By way of a "damper", are you using some sort of self closing gate between the baffle and the attic?
And how are you finishing the opening in the ceiling?
Inquiring minds want to know (and copy)
