Rng, we usually wait until the late evening/ sunset to turn on the fan. Sometimes later, like just before bed, if the temps are still warm. Our nighttime temps will seldom be above 60, usually around the 55 mark. Once the outside temp matches close to the inside A/C temp, we switch to the house fan.
In the morning, we turn the fan off and close the windows. The A/C doesn't click on until about noon.

For opening the windows, last night we opened two windows in the front of the house about 2". The 2 bedroom windows (Opposite end of the house) were opened about 4". You can control where and how much ventilation by opening the windows/doors.

Thanks for the links, Ted.

From your photos, it looks like you're making your own baffle in the ceiling, then using one of their gable fans instead of their much more expensive whole house fans, right?

I like your idea a lot more, as it avoids opening up the attic to the outside, which would provide an additional path for ember entry.

By way of a "damper", are you using some sort of self closing gate between the baffle and the attic?

And how are you finishing the opening in the ceiling?

Inquiring minds want to know (and copy)

Seem to be more than a few of us here with iPhones. Just got an email about a class action lawsuit involving the performance of Apple iPhone 6, 7, and SE. If everybody files a claim, it would only amount to about twenty-five bux, but that's twenty-five bux you wouldn't otherwise have, right?

Here's the info on filing a claim:

I got the same email last week. I still didn't submit the claim yet....

The dampers are 12.4" round self closing baffles. There is a rubber gasket that they close against. I am using 2 of them. They are mounted in a piece of OSB that will fit on the bottom of the plenum. On the ceiling side, I was originally going to make a wood shutter, but that would be very labor intensive. The new plan is to trim the opening with 1x4 stained pine, then use a standard 16x30" steel return air grille from HD. I am going to paint it black to match the black hardware used on the pine beams throughout the house. It will screw into the ceiling joists, for easy removal if need be.

Here is a pic of the dampers I used: https://www.ecomfort.com/products-image/600/19774-165156-thickbox.jpg

I will post a pic of the dampers installed later this afternoon.

And yes, the attic fan is the same as what they use on the whole house fan setup, less the ductwork and ceiling damper. I searched and searched for just the damper .... they don't list it as a separate part, and there are no other similar.... so made my own!

69°F and .06 inches rain.

Sears tech came yesterday and got cottage washer repaired. Sure glad I’m on the home protection plan.

Moved 10 buckets of topsoil to dress along the driveway where I dug up for gas line. Still more to go

Had decided to mow when it started spitting. Of course by the time the tractor was back in shed it had stopped. So had my motivation and called it a day.

Mowing tops on my list today.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

boy is it good to sit down, take off a sweaty shirt and drink a cold bottle of water. I'm done, fully moved out of assisted living.
Everything fit in 10x10 self storage with just a bit to spare. Not as hot today but very humid with thunderstorms due in later.
I need to watch the radar to make sure I take the awning in.

got a little hairy with the box van the storage place offers for free, (and free was what it was worth...) 16 year old tired box van which almost immediately had a brake problem, something was hanging up, and by the time I got it to assisted living smoke was coming out of the front left. It cooled off and on way back I tried not to use brakes at all, and it ran ok. I suggested they get it in a shop soon, and the response was "oh it just came out of the shop". Un huh.

Truma hot water heater won't go on, I turned it off this morning to save propane, big mistake. Might have to call Truma and have them walk me through some kind of reset. It's been finicky since the beginning.

Good ideas on the cooky sheet and tile. Even the mats made of heat proof material said minimum of one foot elevation.

David, nice job on driveway and an excellent helper you had too.

83F and mostly sunny @ 13:00, high today predicted to be 88F.

Have painting/staining scheme entirely finalized at this point (... I think ...) ... and have successfully avoiding doing any further tinting :)rolleyes:) ... so will be using entire "stock" colors ...

That's good from a number of perspectives, not the least of which is that I can go to Menards and pick up more stain while the rebate is still on ...

Got second coat of stain applied to repair panel for shop, and more work done on garage clean up last night.

One load of stuff moved out of the garage to around back, at least one more to go. Still have some wood I need to get moved inside (possibility of stray shower later this evening)

Bird feeders refilled, except for one tube feeder which I need to finish cleaning out today.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ...

My 7+ is not eligible. I’m not having much luck with such things lately.

Well, almost afternoon, but I got the dampers installed! WOW, what a difference in noise level. On low, we cannot hear the fan at all unless standing underneath it. On high, it now has the noise of being on low without the dampers. We can easily hear the TV or radio without turning them up (that's a good thing because I can barely hear them anyway). Now I just need to get the grill, paint it, and install.

At first try, I thought "oh no!", the dampers would barely open..... then it hit me.... the house is closed up tight with the A/C on.... opened the back door and WALAAA! They opened up as planned. WHEW!

Our old house had a big 30" whole house fan. It would make the whole 3600 sq ft down right chilly at night.

Yup ... I installed one of those in our first house which did not have AC. Made a big difference.

Our current set up is just a gable vent fan - which does not pull air from the inside (intakes are in the overhangs/soffit)

Nonetheless, it has made a huge difference in cooling the house by keeping the attic temps a lot lower during the day. It generally kicks on around 11:00, runs all day when it's hot out or there is a lot of sun, and then shuts off about an hour or so after sunset.

Before I installed it, the AC had trouble keeping up during the hottest parts of the day and you could literally feel the IR radiation coming off the ceiling upstairs.

The new cottage was supposed to get a quiet cool fan, but was cut out of the budget at the last minute. I am kinda glad it did get cut out, the one I was going to use was around $600. This one is a quiet cool fan, but I bought everything Ala Carte.... at a cost of $215.
