My neighbors for a time fled to New Zealand... they were older professional couple and only came back when Obama was elected...

I had the chance to learn more and number one is they found New Zealand is very high cost with limited offerings... the great outdoors didn't hold as much appeal even for active 80 year old...

They owned a home there and the wife was employed as there is a 20 year difference in age...

They left the East Coast for NZ and he was active in Al Gore campaign. Decided to give the SF Bay Area a try before moving to Portland OR

Sounds like they'll fit right in...

Living in North Carolina for two decades, the south has given me a new appreciation for not so busy coastal towns during the summer, with beautiful shorelines in NC, SC and Georgia.

New England beaches always seemed good for walking, Jersey beaches all remind me of Myrtle beach, which I stay away from because I don't like crowds.

As much as I love spending a relaxing week on a not so busy beautiful shore line, I could never understand owning a home that you have to build on stilts because you know you're going to get water damage during some point in time, and it's only a matter of time when you have to use the evacuation routes and you have no clue what kind of mess you'll find when it's safe to return.

What they don't realize is that the water table they are risking is more valuable than the oil they are extracting.

The problem is they do know it but choose profit over a valuable resource, the revenue they get from this blinds idiot politicians so they won't see or acknowledge the logic.

The day is coming........ Then the politicians will be heard screaming "OH, God - the sky if falling". They will activate a plan for correction with the same degree of completeness as they have for CV-19.

Human nature...........

Back to the tax thing.... when we were selling our house in SE Pa back in 1990, most of the lookers were coming out of N. Jersey or New York City area. I had thought the taxes were high on our place (somewhere around $10K / yr). When those folks heard the tax rate, they were ecstatic! They were paying almost triple that on less real estate.

When we were at the settlement table for our first property out here, the gal running the show stated "your property tax will be $360".... I looked at the wifey and said "wow.. that's not bad...$360 a month". There was a brief moment of silence.... then the gal said..."that's per year...not monthly "
I nearly fell out of the chair....

I have been out here 27 years... our property tax on a 3600 sq ft house on 5 acres is currently $1068.00 There are no other taxes aside from a 7% sales tax on goods. No food tax, no vehicle tax (registration is $42 yr for my truck), very low state income tax, no local taxes.

I guess it is not too bad out here after all !

And the same politicians are seemingly blind to the coming generations that we are leaving in a big mess.

And back to the beaches....

Wife and I have rented a house near the ocean beaches in Nags Head every few years and get our fill of it. We were going to rent on the gulf coast in Alabama one year, but a hurricane changed plans, and then the big oil spill changed them again. Still waiting for the opportunity to rent in that area.

We spend a lot of time on the southeast coast of Lake Michigan. Beautiful sunsets. Wouldn't mind having a home a few blocks from the coast, but the taxes are outrageous.

I have been looking online at some homes in areas we have visited and liked. Realtor.com has a decent site and shows what the last tax burden is on each property. Some are surprisingly low in nice areas.

Until the cityfolk invade and demand city level services.

I was cityfolk, but when I moved, I adapted. I knew some things would never be here. We now have a few things I never really expected, but have managed to keep costs low. Grocery stores, lumber stores, etc. are still 20+ miles away though.
