Buying Used

I also mix and match. I absolutely agree that the well maintained and cared for piece of equipment is worth purchasing over new, but I find this stuff is hard to find. It also makes selling my used equipment more difficult until the right buyer comes along.

For example, I am selling off a ZD331 commercial diesel mower. 1600 hours and perfectly maintained by the book. People looking at it scoff at the hours and basically call it a beat up machine (it also shows well). Eventually someone will see it for what it is.

I have bought several used vehicles and many new ones. The used ones for the most part turned out OK. Probably saved some money. As for used tractors, I hunted HARD for a good used tractor when looking for my first tractor. I never found anything worth buying. I know some people luck out and find great bargains. I was never able to find anything but clapped out trash. Or used that cost as much as new.

So for those that have found tractor bargains. good on you. I was just never able to do it, and always bought new. All 5 of them.

I also have no problem buying used.

I do have a HUGE problem with paying almost new, new, or even higher than new prices for used equipment.

That is just stupid.

And I'm not stupid.

If I can find a good deal on a used piece of equipment, that isn't destroyed or nearly unusable due to wear and abuse? Sure, I'm in.

If you're asking new price for your used piece? Even if it's museum preserved condition? I'm heading out to buy somewhere else while muttering, "Good Luck, Buddy." As I drive down the road.

I'll shop around for a while when trying to buy a piece, but usually I'm under some kind of time limit. I can't just sit and wait for months or years for something to come along. If I didn't "need" it, I wouldn't be buying one in the first place. Around here, most of the used stuff is either semi-destroyed garbage, or they're asking so close to (or even more than) new price, it makes no sense not to just go buy one at a dealer or store.

Years (decades) ago, it seemed that used stuff sold for "used" prices, and new stuff sold for "new" prices. Doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Now everyone wants brand new price for everything they're selling, regardless of how long they've had it, or what condition it's in.

So anymore, it seems like I'm buying new much more often than in years past.

Yes!! Exactly. This is why I bought a NEW truck in 2017. The used market was at or near the same prices.

I tend to think that easier financing for used items has pushed the used market higher.

That was exactly my experience in trying to find a good used tractor. Either clapped out trashed out for a lower price, or if I found something good, they wanted new or near new price for it. So I bought new.
