Thanks for all the replies.

Width of my wheels is 47". So a 48" will cover tracks but barely.

I can get by with the 48" as it covers my wheels although I think I want the 54. I know weight is a double-edge sword as I need weight for the blade to work but too much weight will cause wheels to spin when box is full of dirt. I have it narrowed down to the EA HD which is 355 pounds and the Land Shark 2.1 (also Everythingattachments dot com) which is 289 pounds.

If I go 54", the weights are 370 for the HD and 315 for the Land Shark 2.1.

I think I like the heavier and leaning towards the 54" HD ...but will that extra weight (81 pounds heavier than the lightweight 48") be a good thing or a bad thing? Again, the double-edged sword. If anybody has a subcompact and a box blade, what is the weight of it and what is your experience?

Thank you.

I have a Frontier Box Blade (BB2048L, weight is 275#) and the problem I've always had when using it to spread road mix for the driveway is:

On my MF GC2410 the Cat. I, 3 point hitch, only floats when the box blade is lowered all the way and does not provide for any down force for spreading of the road mix.

Last year I purchase an ATV storage box (36" x 15" x 15") and added 1/4" plate platform for two reasons:

1). I desired to have my chainsaw, fuel, bar oil, extra parts, safety gear, chains & straps with shackles, and "JAWS", with me while using the tractor on the property for convenience.

2). I also desired this extra weight on top of the box blade for better performance while using it.

I think I have added about 250 - ??? pounds on top of my box blade and I am very satisfied with the added weight.

I have used it like this for my neighbors driveway spreading about 40 - 50 cubic yards of road mix and the results were a better job in about half the time.

Here are a few pics of my addition to my box blade:

Thank you. Based on your experience, it sounds like I'd be better off with the heavier unit. I don't know much about my 3-point hitch...but I would assume it is the same as your and would float.

Your 3pt will be fine. I'm pretty sure you can lift around 1k lbs

3pt lift capacity is key. Unlikely that you're going to be able to get anything of the appropriate size that is going to challenge your tractor's 3pt lift capacity. But, a rough rule is to try to keep weight to under 1/2 what the 3pt lift is. Of course, one can fudge a bit: it's not some law of physics; it just provides for the fact that most things hang out further and present a lot more weight via leverage. Sometimes you have to raise the box blade when it's full of soil/material, and while it's not a bucket -it doesn't really look to pick up all the captured material, there's some added weight from friction: I scraped a lot of sod with my 7' box blade, having the sod just rolling up and over on top of the front of the box blade which added additional weight and made it dig even harder.

The 3pt on my Kubota B7800 is rated at something like 1,300 lbs. The 5' box blade I was using on it was 500+ lbs.

With box blades weight makes all the difference. Many people, as noted here, actually add weight to improve performance. But, a lot depends on the soil conditions/material. I'd rarely use the scarifiers on my box blades as my soil isn't all that loose: I am able to anchor my B7800 with that 500 lb box blade as well as anchoring my Kioti NX5510 with a 1,200 lb box blade.

AND... a hydraulic top link is essential. Well, I got by with my Kubota without one (because it really doesn't have an easy way to add), but if you can do it, do it! Angle of attack with a box blade is what makes it work (and keep it from becoming an anchor!), and that's accomplished with the top link's setting.

So I decided on the 48" EA. However, I called to order and they state it is a 6-week turnaround best case. My 2 jobs I need this for can't wait that long. Surprising that they don't have some level of inventory...really bummed I can't get the EA.

Any other recommendations on a quality 48" Box Blade?

You could look to get a woods (usually sold by the dealership). Manufacturing and supply chains are a mess right now with the fallout from covid.
