Choosing just one grease..

/ Choosing just one grease.. #101
The idea of "choosing just one grease" comes across as a lazy, irresponsible endeavor, ESPECIALLY, if others depend on using the equipment maintained so poorly.
Take a look at this:
Lever Action Grease Gun

Grease guns are cheap.
Equipment IS NOT!
I just bought a flail mower for $5500.00.
Should I use the grease specified by the manufacturer, or play it lazy and use the one and only grease I have limited myself to?
We use water proof grease, food grade grease, HP grease, general purpose grease and a couple more.
There are good reasons for all of the greases available and good reasons the manufacturers specified the ones that they did.

I would say read the recommended grease tech data sheet. And compare to what you are using, or the suggestions in this thread. Bet you can reduce your grease inventory, with no compromise on durability.

I only need one grease for FEL pins and U-joints and I'm no fan of lever grease guns in-fact I cant stand them, after using a Dewalt Battery grease guns theres no way I'm going back to lever, battery grease guns aren't cheap but very efficient even more along with the Lock&Lube..........

I noticed today I use the TSC 3% moly. Starts to melt at 325F per the box that contains 10 tubes.

Smartest post in this thread so far in my opinion!
Thank you!

Moly is an extreme pressure additive. It is not a "fix all" (plenty of crappy moly greases out there), but it does help, in EXTREME impact and pressure situations. If you are going to put up with staining, and you need the extreme pressure properties, you want 5% moly content. Best choice is Paragon 3000 IMHO. Check for compatibility before switching.

Jury is still out on moly grease and high speed bearing applications, which for me is enough of a red flag to take it out of my "one grease" choice matrix.

Is this a Amsoil jury and is there time estimate on the jury's verdict............ I have no red flags but like to know by next month, thats when I'll be getting case of grease.

Lol no it's not an Amsoil jury. They don't have the monopoly on good grease. Royal also makes a fine general purpose, but it seems they are even less available than Amsoil, which you already seem to be struggling with...

Oldpath, you have my one grease recommendation. It's the amsoil synthetic grease I have linked above. Buy it. Grease your equipment, with the bonus smug feeling you are using a grease that's better than 99% of the greases available, for multiple uses.

I personally would not bother with Moly grease, unless i was running a large excavation/mining/forestry outfit, with huge machines and slop at the joints, large impacts etc.

I'm finding just the opposite in my neck of the woods, Royal is even on ebay for under $10.00/tube where Amsoil is non existent and harder find. So if Amsoil is listening would you dare to say Royal grease is just as good............ Royal Purple Ultra Performance Grease NLGI#2 Synthetic Grease>>> ULTRA-PERFORMANCE(R) GREASE | Royal Purple

I've been doing a lot of FEL work this year on Mystik grease, I do 4-6hr of work my bucket pins are getting dry, I look in the crevices and see bare steel on pins, dont like that.

Sorry, not Royal Purple. Just an OK grease, mostly hype, and likely not a noticeable improvement on the Mystik.

I meant Royal Ultra 865HD. Not as good as the Amsoil, but close. I had no luck finding it, especially in Canada. Maybe easier in the US. I would still pick the Amsoil, unless you can easily get the Royal at a killer price.

PS If see you were using Mystik green tube general purpose, which is just OK. Even just going to the Mystik JT-6 High Temp red would be a noticeable upgrade. upgrade.

Since this thread has morphed a bit from its original intent (choosing just one grease), I figure we can add a bit to it.

Just one grease, bearings, light medium duty on pins, you keep up with your greasing, prefer less staining? Amsoil Synthetic Multi-Purpose #2.

OK with having a different grease for bearings, don't mind black stains, beat the crap out of your pins, work under harsh conditions, sometimes slack off on your greasing? 5% moly grease. In order of preference, TRC Paragon 3000, TRC Chassis 880, Schaefer 238, CAT branded 5% moly. I'm sure there are others here. 5% moly is important, but so is base stock.

Grease high speed bearings only, or don't mind having a special grease for that? Amsoil Dominator Synthetic Racing Grease.

I welcome alternate suggestions, that have spec sheets showing better performance for these use cases.
