DYI fume extractor ideas

For fire reasons and also metal contamination on wood projects, I hate having a mixed metal/wood shop. I scrapped plans recently to build a new shop with dedicated areas due to economics of the project.


I procrastinated for years for the same reason. What would have cost a lot, now costs even more. My dream shop is now 1/2 the size and will be over $100,000.00 when finished. Now at 72, I have the feeling that I left it too late and won't get enough use of it. I'm running out of time. Free advice is worth what you pay for it.

That's my situation to. I moved from where I lived over 40 years and don't have near enough space. I considered selling a bunch but when I tested the waters,I'm not ready to put up with buyers or more accuratly,people that say they want to buy but are only passing the time. Rather than build smaller to fit the budget,I'm going with post frame rather than weld up.

Yes you do need more CFM's for exhausting fumes, and I had to put ear plugs in to watch your welding video, ha.

My neighbor gave me a 24X24 inch squirrel cage blower, with a 1/2 horsepower belt drive motor,,
I have it mounted up high, and it is aimed at the main drive-through garage door.

I plug it in when I am gonna weld, it LITERALLY sucks EVERY fume out of the shop.
AND, since it is no where near the weld, there is no draft to bother the weld quality.

I also have a 48" roll around, belt drive, fan, but, that thing is so big, it causes drafts,,

With the squirrel cage blower, you never even smell a weld fume, unless you stick your head right down into the weld area,,

My wife used to complain about my clothes smelling like weld fumes, after a project,,
No more, if the fumes are gone, they can not smell up your clothes,,,:thumbsup:

I was fortunate to find a grossly overpriced and overrated Miller portable fume extractor on eBay at a reasonable price.

That said, it is rarely used. Not worth the trouble to set it up for intermittent welds on small fabrication projects and not necessary (or feasible) on larger jobs.





It is most likely ideal for a small shop with a permanent welding table.

Got a question for all de exhaust fellows, what you doing to keep exhaustin once de room goes negative pressure?

Wonder if dis thread gets all de way to forward incline/reverse incline and flat blades on de fan and loss of efficiency as de blades coat. Give ya a free hint, DON'T spend time tryin to use a condenser fan from a HVAC unit to move air unless ya use a proper nasal to deal wid tip vortexes.

Far as blowin tings up, get back ta me when ya ready to braze spark plug bosses into 55 gallon drums lef in de sun to vaporize de contents all day. You kids need some learnin.

Take your drivel somewhere else - or even better - just keep it to yourself. I've yet to see you contribute anything of value.

If your fan motor is in the airflow, don't use it for any flammable vapors, like oil-based painting.

I got my shop into usable condition in 1999 ( I stamped the year into the concrete with two house numbers, a 1 and a 9, restamped three times )
I was 49 years old,, the shop is 57 X 45 feet.

Just this week, we drove past the shop as we were going out shopping,, my wife commented about it,
She said that was one of our better investments, and how useful the shop has been.

Other than a little second level flooring, that is T&G hardwood, there is not a nail in the shop,,
The frame is welded, and the siding screwed to 2X2X 1/4 inch angle. The roof is attached similarly.

Build the shed TODAY,, you will enjoy EVERY day that it is usable!!

I might just go out and do some welding,, tomorrow!! :thumbsup:

Another great reason besides noise to locate the compressor remotely. Still thinking this is my long term solution.

I get truly sick and tired of hearing my compressor, but too lazy to build a heated room to house it.

I think if I build an adjoining (sound and heat) insulated 'outhouse' I should be golden. My problem is being sure I get all of the design details right so many of my projects remain on the 'drawing board'. I tend to be a perfectionist as well as a procrastinator... not a good combination. :laughing:

I don’t procrastinate, i simply schedule my projects 32 years in advance. That way they will all get done sooner or later, but there never delayed.
