Wellllllll, I sort of like goats. We started with them about 2 years ago with the idea that they would make the property more fire safe. They are fenced in in the area behind the house on about 3 acres. They do a great job taking down the weeds and grass and bushes and more. We live in the central California foothills, so there's that.
Beyond that, we really enjoy them - have 12, know all their names and personalities, and find them entertaining. A bonus is that the grandkids love them as well. I have to agree with many of the comments about goats though. My observations:
-they will stick their heads in where they do not belong and once stuck it is really difficult to get them out.
-they are curious about everything and consider everything to be their personal business - don't try to get any work done if they have access to where you are working.
-they eat a lot of different things but they also have different tastes - some love every kind of fruit, banana peels, and tomatoes, a few won't eat the same things.
-if you drop a piece of fruit or whatever and pick it up and try to give it to them they will not - just will not - eat it.
-they are extremely friendly, will climb on you and a lot of fun to be around, especially when they are babies.
-my daughter will walk them like you would walk a dog and go on short hikes (though not all of them are manageable this way).
-they do not attract flies like our cows do.
-if you open a gate they will all be there to get out, though they come back in easily.
-they will enter any door or building they can get into, including car doors
So far they have not escaped - we have hog fencing around most of their area, and chain link fencing around the rest. Anyway, even though they require a bit of work they provide laughs just about every day. The trouble they cause is a small price to pay for the enjoyment we get.
BTW - we have mostly Nigerian Dwarf goats, one pigmy, and two nubians. The prices Eddie recites seem about right for this area as well though I have seen some more elaborate goat farms asking much more for certain goats.
Finally - when we went to pick up one of the baby Nigerian Dwarf goats, the owner handed him to us saying he liked to sleep in the house on a cat bed, loved car rides and loved to watch cartoons. True story. We bought him anyway.
