Man! That is the one mistake I made with my GC purchase! ...I should have gotten the 60" instead of the 54"! The 54" cuts so nice too but that extra 6" and the tractor doesn't even care the 54" is there. It laughs at it.

In other news, I mounted the gearbox today, filled it with oil and let 'r rip on the ol' PTO. And let me tell you...she hums.(I'll film it when I put the blade bar on) Speaking of the the blade bar, put it on my balancer and I've got a bit of work to do. It close but not close enough for melt liking. I guess 55 years of beating up saplings, grass and, who knows what else can put something out of balance.

Finally, My neighbor's father-in-law is a head machinist and is making up new blade bolts for me as JD wants $70+ per bolt and $25+ per nut no matter where I looked. Should be taking it to mow this weekend if everything works out as planned. (I'll video that too)View attachment 670464

Look forward to seeing it in action.

The guy I sold my 1710 to, adamantly didn’t want the deck (54”) as he had an older JD rider. The evening before he picked it up, I cut with it. First thing out of his mouth when he arrived to pick it up was to ask of the cut was from the deck, yup. He went home and
Listed his rider.

The 1723 has the 60”, it may cut even a bit better.

Is the 54" worse than the 60"? I certainly shave some time mowing with the massey with it's 60" compared to my craftsman gt with the 50", but that has as much to do with how much more powerful the shaft driven deck on the massey is compared to craftsman's belt driven deck.

It's not worse I don't think, just smaller. The mechanical aspects are the same. Mine is not a drive over deck but neither was the 60" when I bought mine in 2015. At the time the 60" was $400 more and I had a lot of yards traps that would have made the 60" tougher to maneuver. Turns out, with the lights sticking out like big ears and the ROPS system you aren't getting close anyhow and would want a deck that sticks out farther to have a chance.

The 6” saves me 30-40 minutes over the 54”

(Not a scientific time check) just went from around 2.5 hours to cut, down to under 2.

breaking up compost/loam pile that sat all year. pigweed was 5ft tall with stalks up to 2" thick and roots 18" deep.
pile is now approx 15 yds.
will be adding another 20yds horse manure to mix in soon. great garden soil.
DL letter on loader 8ft tall from level, front hood 3.5 or so ft higher than rear had to hold onto loader arms to get off and on.
