Not sure why you created those squares in the middle of your gate?

Since you didn't put diagonal bracing in your gates, you should really run a cable from the top hinge corner to the opposite bottom cable so they wont sag on you. I would also install inside metal brackets to your corners so they don't come apart.

The squares are just a byproduct of the diagonal bracing on the gate. I couldn't just run screws and box the 4x4's without some support or it would sag and wouldn't be square. I do have steel cable that I'll be running diagonal from the top of the posts to bottom of the next post, but I'm not sure how much I'll actually need it. The posts are already tied to the other posts by the 2x4's, so they really shouldn't be able to sag.

I think he meant to say you should run a cable on the gate itself, from the top hinge corner to the opposite bottom corner on the gate, so they won't sag on you.

I get the cable as a belt and suspenders approach, but when the pickets are screwed on, won't that be a whole bunch of additional diagonals?

Not if vertical to match his fence.

Unless he puts two screws in the top and bottom of each picket, the pickets will offer zero resistance to a folding parallelogram.

I guess I was thinking he would put screws through the top and bottom 4x4s and diagonal 2x4s. I'm not dismissing the cable idea.

And add hanging weight to the gate.

Have to install the steel cables yet but the gates are basically done. They swing nicely and open and close nicely. When it's closed you can't tell it's even there. After I get the cables installed I'll do pickets on the back side as well.
