They ran fiber down the main roads and some of the rural back roads here to DSLAMs (remote terminals), spaced roughly 2-3 miles apart. From those they spliced in the copper that goes to the homes. I was only getting 3Mb (barely) until they did that. I now get fairly stable 25Mb down and 1.5-2 up.

That's for sure. Here in Oz we actually use the fiber we put in the ground.

The point I was relating is that they (mostly Verizon) got monies from the gov. (previous admin) to run the fiber...they took the money and laid the fiber knowing full well it would never be used...

That's what they did here too. Not sure why they did it that way. I have no idea what kind of speed they're getting...the same year Fairpoint (telco at the time) ran fiber in my town, Time Warner (now Spectrum) did the same. TWC was ready first, so we went with them (and now have cable tv!!!! :thumbsup: no OTA to be had here).
Prior to the fiber run we were too far out for DSL.

Just ride around in rural areas...you'll see thousands and thousands of the stanchions / risers where the fiber is buried...they usually end where the pavement does...the logistics of expanding it further make it economically impossible...especially where the majority of households reside on unimproved roads/lanes...

When they ran fiber here they strung it on poles, nothing buried.

In other words, you and I paid for a fiber run to nowhere? Sounds about right.

SpaceX is sending Starlink beta test invites. Cost is $99/mo. plus $499 one time charge for equipment. TBD if that will be the post beta test cost. Lots of new and interesting info in the article.

Don't be discouraged, Elon's promise may become reality in the near future. :confused3: IMHO there are going to be millions of customers, the result will be lower cost (aka supply and demand).

I typically get 50 meg down and 10 meg up on my Netgear 4G LTE Modem and Netgear Router behind it for a whopping $22 a month for unlimited data on my Mobley plan. I think I'll stick with what I have.

It does not mention anything about a contract length of time required or can it be dropped at anytime without penalty. Also are you responsible for the equipment setup?
