My experience checking Diesel compression is with a 7.3L IHC and in that case I drilled out an old glowplug and made an adapter out of it. A lot simpler if you can find a ready made adapter. I have some experience spending considerable time and money fixing things that turned out not to be broke. That’s why I’m suggesting doing an actual compression test before tearing into it so you know for certain that it has a compression problem. I think you mentioned earlier that once started it goes to work just fine and that could be another sign that your compression isn’t all that bad.
